Wartburg Castle | UNESCO
Wartburg Castle was the scene of several important historic events, including the Wartburg Festival of 1817, which saw the beginning of the German Reformation. The castle became famous in the 19th century when it was visited by Goethe, Schiller, and other notable writers and artists.
But is perhaps best known through its connection to the German church reformer Martin Luther who sought refuge in the castle in 1521 after he was excommunicated by the pope and outlawed by the emperor for undermining Catholic doctrine with his 95 Theses.
