Gaunt’s first customer is a boy, Brian Rusk. He sells him a rare Mickey Mantle card for 95 cents… and one small favor. Just a prank. Throw mud on Wilma’s clean sheets. Harmless.

Basically the “harmless” favor lands exactly where it should. The wrong person gets blamed. Old grudges surface, retaliation follows, and no one sees the pattern. By the time it turns violent, it feels justified. The town isn’t being attacked directly as much as its weaknesses exploited. It’s turning on itself.
