3.13.26: Russia is expanding its censorship beyond blocking websites and VPN services by targeting major communication platforms. Authorities have indicated that Telegram β widely used in the country β may soon become inaccessible even when users attempt to bypass restrictions with a VPN (Castro, 2026).
Russiaβs internet regulator, Roskomnadzor, blocked 1.3 million web pages in a 12-month period, according to recent data. That represents a 59% increase compared with the previous year (Castro, 2026).
At the same time, a new Russian law that came into force in September punishes online searches for content the government labels βextremistβ (International Bar Association, 2025).
