Although the Church of The Holy Apostles has been destroyed for centuries, and the bodies of the Basileis and Basilisses lost to time; one still remains. On the island of Kerkyra(Corfu), lies the only surviving Imperial remains, those of the Holy Basilissa St. Theodora II, wife of Basileus Theophilos.
After Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks, Mehmed turned his eyes to the Holy Apostles. The Patriarch was moved to the church after the Fall but in 1456, Mehmed wanted to destroy the holy church. In a desperate act of protection, a certain priest, George Kalohairetis, hid the body of St. Theodora and a relic of St. Spyridon in a carriage filled with hay.
He traveled throughout Thrace and into Greece, and was then moved by ship to the Island of Kerkyra, where the relics are today! They are held at the Cathedral of Kerkyra and are paraded through the Old City on every Sunday of Orthodoxy.
