Collins had, amongst other concessions, agreed to the Anglo-Irish Treaty that partitioned Ireland into a north, which remained in the UK, and a south. The signing of this led to the Irish Civil War in which he was killed.
Historians have suggested that if Ireland had not been partitioned, it would regardless have led to an extremely bloody conflict in the north, with large-scale ethnic cleansing between protestant and catholic populations.
