In some cases, people's tendency to focus on others can cause someone irreparable harm.
If a person suddenly becomes ill on the street, the crowd will not rush to help him. Everyone, seeing that no one reacts (without feeling public support), will pass by, assured that everything is fine.
Yet, single out one person from the crowd and address him specifically: "The man/woman in the blue jacket - there you are! I need your help right away. Please call an ambulance!" and he/she will not hesitate to help.
