The South African Special Service Battalion (SSB), established before the war, in 1933, was based on the Hitler Youth (Wikipedia will never mention this)
"The one aspect of Defence policy which has never been criticised either before, during or after the war, was the establishment of the Special Service Battalion. It enjoyed the special patronage of General Hertzog, who was enamoured of its social consequences.
This body was brought into being towards the end of the depression when young men were not easy to place in employment and were thereby exposed to the risks of juvenile delinquency. I frankly admit that the idea, in so far as it originated with me β General Brink, Sir Pierre van Ryneveld and others were co-authors β came from the example of Hitler's Youth Camps. The object was not to train more soldiers, but to make better citizens of these young men."
Oswald Pirow (1957). James Barry Munnik Hertzog. p. 219.
