In the photo: A queue for bread in the village, Chuvashia, the Soviet Union (1968). In 1960, the USSR was gripped by a food crisis. Some types of cereals, egg noodles, butter, melted milk, and semi-finished meat products have disappeared from store shelves. "Restrictions were set in bread shops: only loaves of grayish bread were sold, which was prepared with an admixture of peas," wrote the author of "The Adventures of Dunno and his Friends," Nikolaĭ Nosov. In a letter dated October 10, 1963 from the workers of the Stavropol Territory enterprises, appeared the following quote addressed to the communist party suggesting that Khrushchev himself try to eat pea bread: "Everything is gone. Bakeries and other products are not baked, white bread is not sold anywhere. And this leads to the fact that many people have stomach aches because they always eat bread with pea flour... But who is to blame for this now, when agriculture has given 11 billion pounds of bread to the state, and now we are forced to eat pea bread?"
