The Marxist government of Salvador Allende in Chile altered the constitution, implemented collectivization of land, and began to take over industry. At the same time, various armed revolutionary groups and militias operated in the country. The most prominent of these groups was the Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria (MIR), a leftist revolutionary organization that sought to overthrow the government and establish a socialist state. The MIR engaged in armed terror and sabotage. Other leftist militant groups and armed factions also operated in Chile. Their guidance and support came from Cuba and the USSR. The terrorism of these secret armies and revolutionary groups, along with the collapse of the economy, constituted the "pre-revolutionary stage" which Marxists aimed to create. Unfortunately for them, in 1973, a coup d'état by General Augusto Pinochet and the Chilean military brought a sharp and bitter end to all attempts to turn Chile into a failed communist state like Cuba.
