"Let the enemy rage at the gate; let him knock, hammer, scream, howl; let him do his worst. We know with certainty that he can only enter our souls through the door of our consent."

"Omnibus II," 1892.
Anders Zorn
(1860-1920)
The artist recalls, "The subject amused me by the fact that very different people meet each other during the trip - a worker who is tired after a grueling day of work, wants to fall asleep at the shoulder of his beautiful unfamiliar neighbor; a young modiste in the foreground, on whose face falls a spot of electric light from the middle of the boulevard, and who I believe is typical of the hard-working, honest and kind French working class. I made many trips from Montmartre in an omnibus before (the idea of the future painting) became clear in my mind and then in my work."
