In the time of Diocletian (ruled 284-305) an elite unit appeared, designed for the personal protection of the emperor - Herculiani Seniores. As its name implies, the divine patron of this unit was Hercules, and the black eagle spread its wings on its shields.

The basis of the unit was the Sixth Legion of Hercules (Legio VI Herculia), previously created by Diocletian and stationed in the Balkans. Among other things, the legion was notable for its boundless loyalty to the emperor, so at some point Diocletian decided to counterbalance the power of the Praetorian Guard, from which, as you know, any meanness could be expected. So two new bodyguard units were created - the Herculiani Seniores as well as the Ioviani Seniores (recruited from the Fifth Jupiter Legion, Legio V Iovia, also stationed in Illyrica). The first of these units, Herculiani, was formally "attached" to Maximian, Diocletian's junior co-creator, who was nicknamed Herculian, and the second, Ioviani, was attached to Diocletian himself.

The Last Hotel

The guesthouse run by Dorothea Puente, a well-behaved old lady in Sacramento, California, was a place of exquisite luxury. But being a guest there was life-threatening: the grandmother murdered her guests for the money and checks they had on them.

In all, she killed at least 15 people over several years. In 1988 she was sentenced to life imprisonment. The murdering grandmother died in prison at the age of 82.
