Operation Vegetarian was a British military plan in 1942 to disseminate linseed cakes infected with anthrax spores onto the fields of Germany. These cakes would have been eaten by the cattle, which would then be consumed by the civilian population, causing the deaths of millions of German civilians. Furthermore, it would have wiped out the majority of Germany's cattle, creating a massive food shortage for the rest of the population that remained uninfected. Preparations were not complete until early 1944.

Under the title "Deutschland August 1914" Friedrich August von Kaulbach depicts his "Germania" as a personification of the German Reich against a nightly background with a flaming horizon. Her grim gaze directed slightly to the left, her defensive figure dominates the picture. With the imperial crown on her head based on the Ottonian imperial insignia, the bare sword, the shield decorated with heraldic coat of arms and the "female" breastplate, she embodies Germany in its defensive readiness at the beginning of the First World War, because in Germany - as in all countries involved in the war - conviction prevailed to wage a defensive war. Their martial, determined demeanor reflects the Germans' willingness to fight to defend their homeland.
