IIT Kanpur achieves major milestone with India's First Hypervelocity Expansion Tunnel Test Facility, a major achievement that puts India amongst only a handful of countries with this advanced hypersonic testing capability.
The existing facilities at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram have a limitation – they can test only up to 4 km per second. But this new facility can evaluate systems flying at a speed of 3-10 km per second, for which currently there is no test platform in India. The Indian Space Research Organisation currently depends on other agencies to gather the aerodynamic data for such hypersonic velocities. This can now be done at IIT Kanpur.

Report: As part of ‘Aatmanirbharta in Defence’ and to further boost Make-in-India initiative, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed five major capital acquisition contracts worth Rs 39,125.39 crore on March 1, 2024 in New Delhi. Out of the five contracts,

🔹 two with Larsen & Toubro Limited for procurement of Close-in Weapon System (CIWS) and procurement of High-Power Radar (HPR)
🔹 two with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) for procurement of BrahMos missiles and procurement of Ship borne BrahMos system for the Indian Defence Forces.
