This beast represents Babylon and King Nebuchadnezzar.
The eagle’s wings symbolize Babylon’s swift and aggressive conquests.
The plucking of the wings points to Nebuchadnezzar’s humiliation and temporary insanity due to pride (Daniel 4).
Babylon was famous for lion imagery, including lions decorating its gates and walls.
The Second Beast — Medo-Persia
(Daniel 7:5, 17)
The second beast was like a bear, raised up on one side, with three ribs in its mouth, and commanded to devour much flesh.
The bear represents the Medo-Persian Empire.
Being raised on one side shows Persian dominance over the Medes.
The bear symbolizes brute strength, cruelty, and crushing power.
The three ribs represent conquered kingdoms: Lydia (546 BC), Babylon (539 BC), and Egypt (525 BC).
Cyrus the Great and Cambyses II led these conquests.
Medo-Persia expanded through overwhelming military force.
The Third Beast — Greece
(Daniel 7:6, 17)
The third beast was like a leopard with four wings and four heads, and dominion was given to it.
The leopard represents speed and surprise.
The four wings emphasize rapid conquest.
This beast represents the Greek Empire under Alexander the Great.
Alexander conquered much of the known world in only 12 years.
He unified cultures into a single Hellenistic empire.
After his death at age 32, the kingdom was divided among four generals: Ptolemy, Cassander, Seleucus, and Antigonus.
These divisions align with the four heads.
The Fourth Beast — Rome
(Daniel 7:7–8, 11–12, 19–27)
The fourth beast was dreadful, terrifying, and exceedingly strong, with iron teeth, crushing and trampling everything in its path. It had ten horns, and from them arose a little horn that uprooted three.
There is no animal comparison because this empire was unmatched in terror.
This beast represents the Roman Empire.
Rome was the longest-lasting and most unified of the four empires.
Rome’s success came from a professional standing army, advanced tactics, and strict discipline.
Rome also conquered through Romanization, infrastructure, and economic control.
The ten horns represent ten kingdoms arising from Rome.
The little horn represents the Antichrist.
He speaks blasphemously against God.
He persecutes God’s people.
He changes laws.
He reigns for “a time, times, and half a time,” understood as 3.5 years.
This aligns with Revelation 13:5–6.
Summary:
The lion with eagle’s wings represents Babylon.
The bear represents Medo-Persia.
The leopard with four wings and four heads represents Greece.
The terrifying beast with iron teeth represents Rome.
The little horn represents the Antichrist arising from the Roman world.
All four empires appeared exactly as God foretold.

On the final day of the spectacle, writes Eusebius, “Blandina, last of all, like a noble mother who had encouraged her children and sent them ahead victorious to the King, hastened to join them.” Beaten, torn, burned with irons, she was wrapped in a net and tossed about by a wild bull.

In the end, Blandina was tied to a stake and burned alive, her final moments spent praying for her persecutors and giving thanks to God. Her life, though short and marked by suffering, became a powerful symbol of faith’s ability to overcome evil. In her memory we find that true strength lies not in avoiding pain, but in standing firm in what we believe, even when the whole world stands against us.

It may sound odd that a young slave girl who died in AD 177 is a hero of the Christian faith, as she nurtured the faith of other Christians in their time of trial.

But the point of this story, is that Christ “through Blandina” demonstrated that a young slave girl, perhaps the age of 12 or 13, which Roman men looked down upon, was “deemed worthy of great eternal glory.”
