A London jury has found the actor not guilty in a case stemming from allegations by four men Two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey has been acquitted by a London jury on sexual assault charges, perhaps opening the door for him to resume his acting career after being cleared of allegations made by four men.The Southwark Crown Court jury returned its verdict on Wednesday, finding Spacey not guilty on all nine charges stemming from alleged assaults between 2001 and 2013. “I would like to say that I am enormously grateful to the jury for having taken the time to examine all of the evidence and all of the facts carefully before they reached their decision,” the actor told reporters on the courthouse steps.Prosecutors had accused Spacey of being a “sexual bully” who targeted younger men and figured that his victims either would not report his assaults or would not be believed. He was accused of “aggressively” grabbing the crotches of three men and of performing a sexual act on an aspiring actor who had fallen asleep in his London apartment. Jury concludes that Kevin Spacey is innocent Spacey testified for two days on his own behalf, saying that he had merely been promiscuous, seeking sexual relations with men during periods when he was lonely. He claimed that those flings were consensual. The UK accusers came forward in 2017, at the height of the #MeToo movement, after allegations against Spacey by Broadway actor Anthony Rapp were made public. Last October, a New York City jury cleared Spacey of Rapp’s accusations in a $40 million civil lawsuit. Rapp claimed that he was molested by Spacey in 1986, when he was only 14 years old.Spacey, who turned 64 on Wednesday, testified that he was devastated by going six years without getting an acting job because of the assault allegations. “My world exploded,” he said. “There was a rush to judgment before the first question was asked or answered. I lost my job, I lost my reputation, I lost everything in a matter of days.”After winning the Rapp case, the Hollywood star landed a voice part in an independent film called ‘Control.’ He told a German magazine last month that he had other prospective gigs pending with people who were “ready to hire me the moment I am cleared of these charges in London.” READ MORE: Kevin Spacey calls sexual assault accusations ‘absolute b******s’ After the allegations against Spacey were first made public, the actor quickly lost the lead role in the hit political TV series ‘House of Cards’, having his character promptly killed off. He was also erased from Ridley Scott’s 2017 drama ‘All the Money in the World’ during post-production, where his role was recast with a different actor. Spacey won the 2000 Oscar for Best Actor for his role in ‘American Beauty,’ and he was named the Best Supporting Actor for his part in ‘The Usual Suspects’ in 1996.

Trial by media and public opinion leaves no room for the accused to defend himself – and that’s the whole idea Last week, the controversial comedian and movie star Russell Brand became the latest high-profile target of the #MeToo movement. This should not come as a complete surprise, given his celebrity status and sordid history of self-confessed promiscuity. Brand has been a potential target in waiting for some years – and it was probably just a matter of time before the movement zeroed in on him.The attack on Brand followed the well-rehearsed, standard #MeToo modus operandi. A number of anonymous women, none of whom could ever hope to attain the celebrity status of their male target, have accused Brand of various kinds of sexual misconduct – including, most seriously, rape. These alleged acts occurred some years ago, and none were reported to the police at the time they supposedly occurred. Nor have these acts been reported to the police even now.Making a formal complaint to the police would, of course, involve the police independently investigating the allegations – at least to the extent that the British police are capable of impartially investigating allegations of this kind. The ideological predisposition of the police in respect of such matters can perhaps be gauged from the statement issued by them after the media storm against Brand broke last week – the police immediately urged any victims of Brand’s sexual indiscretions to contact them and make complaints against him. Read more FILE PHOTO: Actor and comedian Russell Brand Tara Reade: Russell Brand rape allegations are the return of the MeToo political zombie It is unlikely that the women who have targeted Brand will make formal complaints to the police at this stage – that usually occurs long after the media campaign against the target has destroyed his reputation and career, and seriously prejudiced the likelihood of a fair trial occurring.#MeToo complainants tend to avoid the courts if they can – because the law is based upon notions such as the presumption of innocence and the right to a fair trial. The law also requires complainants to justify their allegations by means of credible evidence; and subjects them to cross-examination.Such notions and practices are completely foreign to the persecutory #MeToo modus operandi. More to the point, they afford the accused a degree of protection that, in some cases, may even enable them to escape the destructive rage of the movement altogether. Complainants prefer trial by an ideologically compliant media, as Brand is now discovering to his cost. No one, of course, has any idea whether the allegations made against Brand are true or not. Brand has denied them – and his accusers have, in typical #MeToo fashion, criticised his response as “insulting.”This denial of the right to defend oneself follows logically from the fundamental assumption that all complainants tell the truth and all targets are liars – an assumption, incidentally, that the courts regularly demonstrate to be false. The allegations against Brand, as in all #MeToo cases, are a curious amalgam of the serious (rape) and the trivial (asking one girlfriend to read Vladimir Nabokov’s novel ‘Lolita’). Ultimately, whether they are actually proved true or not will be a matter for the courts – if, indeed, the allegations made against Brand ever get before a court. Not that credible proof really matters, because Brand has already been found guilty as charged by the media. Police investigations into the comedian have begun, but his career is dead regardless of whether he’s found guilty or not The #MeToo movement’s persecution of celebrity and actor Russell Brand has intensified in predictable fashion over the past week. The London Metropolitan police and Thames Valley police have now commenced separate formal investigations into various complaints lodged against Brand. This comes as no surprise, given that the police enthusiastically invited complainants to come forward – and once a #MeToo target has been identified a raft of additional complaints is certain to emerge.London shopkeepers – who are currently trying to cope with an epidemic of gang-organised shoplifting caused by the police’s refusal to investigate such crimes if less that £200 pounds is involved – must be astounded at the very different approach that the police have taken to the historical complaints, many of them trivial, made against Brand. The police, however, have been ideological captives of the #MeToo movement for many years, and it now seems inevitable that criminal charges will eventually be brought against Brand.Britain’s political elite has also, unsurprisingly, elected to join in the pile-on against Brand in recent days. Dame Caroline Dineage, Conservative MP, former minister, and chair of the Culture, Media and Sports Committee, has written to online video platforms Rumble and TikTok – on which Brand delivers podcasts – asking that they “de-platform” him, thereby depriving him of his major source of income. Read more Russell Brand leaves the Troubabour Wembley Park theatre in north-west London after performing a comedy set on September 16, 2023. Why Russell Brand is unlikely to face actual justice Dineage is a #MeToo warrioress of note who has served the movement with distinction in the past.
