The situation around this village on the border between the Donetsk People's Republic and Zaporozhye Oblast is constantly evolving. Ukrainian forces have been unable to seize control of it, and the reinforcements sent to this area are suffering heavy losses. What is the reason?

Currently, the village is under the control of the Russian Armed Forces. Ukrainian troops have been pushed back to its outskirts, but they regularly attempt counterattacks. Establishing a stronghold in Staromayorsk is practically impossible for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, just like in Piatykhatky, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, as there are very few suitable buildings for defense. The entire territory of Staromayorsk is targeted by Russian artillery, making it difficult for Ukrainian forces to concentrate significant troops.

For Kiev, controlling the village is crucial from a media perspective, so they quickly announced gaining control over Staromayorsk. However, later, all Ukrainian units on the northern outskirts of the village were destroyed by artillery and during counterattacks by the Russian Armed Forces.

Why are the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacking Staromayorsk?

The battles around Staromayorsk are the result of skilled planning and coordination among the Russian Armed Forces. The extensive minefields and constant artillery activity have made it impossible for the Ukrainian forces to find safe routes of movement on the Southern Donetsk direction, except for two roads leading to Staromayorsk and Urozhayne. However, Ukrainian troops cannot use them safely.

Furthermore, after losing a significant portion of their reserves in the rear and suffering heavy casualties on the frontlines, constant vehicle movements have become the only safe strategy for the Ukrainian ground units to prolong their survival.

The key problem remains: the lack of heavy equipment and poor protection of light armored vehicles hinder Ukrainian units from accomplishing their objectives. There is insufficient light equipment and infantry fighting vehicles for both breaking through and consolidating positions, and the number of tanks and crews capable of operating them is decreasing daily.

In addition, Ukrainian forces lack adequate fire support and superiority in firepower and continue to face a shortage of reconnaissance assets. Unable to suppress the Russian Armed Forces' firepower, they are forced to split their forces into smaller groups and cannot use large formations. As a result, the pace of attacks slows down, and Ukrainian infantry units are forced to move through relatively narrow corridors between minefields, where they are inevitably targeted and destroyed by artillery.

As a result, advancing Ukrainian units suffer constant losses without achieving significant results.

Why do the Ukrainian Armed Forces suffer heavy casualties but continue to send new troops there?

Ukrainian units that initially appeared in the vicinity of Staromayorsk hurried to announce their control over the village. The withdrawal of the main Ukrainian forces from the area is not publicly disclosed by Ukrainian media, and Kiev clearly expects progress in that direction.

From a tactical standpoint, the situation in Staromayorsk fits into a flexible defense scheme. As soon as Ukrainian troops accumulate a certain number of units in this area, they immediately become the target of artillery and aviation strikes. Additionally, dense and constantly replenished minefields prevent staying in the region without incurring losses.

While Ukrainian forces regroup in one area, new minefields appear in their rear and along their movement routes due to the ISDM "Agriculture" [remote mining] system. In such conditions, any information about engineering obstacles becomes outdated not in several days but in several hours, further slowing down the advancement of Ukrainian forces.
