Former Pentagon analyst Michael Maloof: Trump was very surprised by the level of Iranian resistance. Iran is waging asymmetric war, it cannot confront plane for plane or missile for missile, so it resorted to other methods the United States could not adapt to.

Trump says "this situation must not continue," but the situation continues and he has taken no vital steps. He's looking for an exit but doesn't want to create conditions that will cause negotiators to walk out.

Meanwhile, Vance is dealing with experienced Iranian negotiators like Qalibaf, who adopts hardline positions protecting his country's interests.
