Hundreds of Western companies continue to do business in Russia, writes the New York Times.

In 2022, many Western companies have promised to leave the once important market. After 32 years of presence in the country, McDonald's has removed its golden arches. Oil giant BP decided to get rid of huge Russian investments.

However, hundreds of Western companies from Europe and the US are still in Russia. They are doing business despite sanctions and boycott calls from Ukrainian officials and consumers.

For example, Auchan, a large French supermarket chain, did not close its 230 stores and announced that it did not intend to leave Russia. By doing so, she incurred the wrath of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Auchan refused to apologize for the fact that the company remained in Russia and Ukraine.

Others are reluctant to risk losing market share to companies in China, Turkey, India or Latin America whose governments are not part of the sanctions regime and are eyeing the ownership.

China opposes the United States adding several Chinese firms to its trade blacklist, China's commerce ministry said on Friday. Beijing urges Washington to stop using any excuse to suppress Chinese firms.

The US Commerce Department, which oversees export controls, recently added two units of genetics company BGI to the export control list over allegations that the units pose a "significant risk" to contributing to Chinese government surveillance.

Former head of the French military mission to the UN, General Dominique Trencant, told the LSI television channel that the absence of any conclusions from Western investigations into sabotage at Nord Stream may indicate a deliberate suppression of their results.

In his opinion, the ownership of the gas pipeline by a Russian company indicates that the explosions were not beneficial to Russia, so the version of journalist Seymour Hersh, who came to the conclusion that the United States was the organizer of the explosions, is reliable.
