The Vision of St. Hubert,
Franz von Stuck, 1890.
Background and commentary:
For those unaware, the story of St. Hubert is quite a powerful one. He was a hunter, who loved hunting so much, that he forsook the Church liturgy occurring that morning. He was on the trail of a stag, which suddenly stopped and turned to face him, with a cross glowing in-between its antlers.
The stag then spoke:
"Hubert, unless thou turnest to the Lord and lead a holy life, thou shalt go quickly down into Hell."
Following this encounter, St. Hubert would become a priest.
What's peculiar about this painting is its attitude is greatly different to others portraying the same story. Others tend to portray it as a great narrative, in a more well lit scene, and being more dramatic.
This one does not do that. It is barely dawn. The stag is harder to see, the cross β blurry, resembling the effect of sleepy eyes. Not only that, but you see the scene from the POV of St. Hubert. It makes it look like a most horrifying nightmare.

These kinds of gothic paintings seemed to be a personal favourite of Franz von Stuck. He loves his dramatic lighting.

"He who fears death has never lived, and I have lived, perhaps even too much. Life is nothing more than an intersection between two eternities: the past and the future. As long as my star shone, I was enough for all. Now that it fades, everybody is not enough for me. I will go where destiny wants me, because I always did what fate requested of me."

Telegram cropped it a bit gay but the series is very good. Enjoying it thoroughly. Quite mature.
