🔴 xAI's Grok 4.7 just doubled its coding score in one jump.

Released yesterday, Grok 4.7 posted 38.0% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 — up from 20.3% in the previous version. Nearly 2x in a single release. The new pricing is $2 / $6 per million tokens (input/output).

Why it matters:
Grok was the laggard of the frontier. With this release, xAI jumped from "interesting" to "competitive" in the same week as Gemini 3 and GPT-6. The frontier is now a five-way race — OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, xAI, and Mistral — and they're shipping on the same week. The "wait six months" era is over.
🧪 Two research papers worth knowing:

1. Sakana AI's MASS: one model, three roles.
A single 27B model acts as solver, judge, AND optimizer with no external supervision. 1.2–1.6× better performance per token across benchmarks. The catch: shared blind spots. When the judge and the solver share weights, the same errors get passed forward as "correct." A clever trick. Also a structural risk.

2. Princeton's "Queen" chess model exposes a lie we keep telling.
Strip the chess engine out, and the underlying LLM drops from 2987 Elo → 514 Elo. The model isn't smart. The tool is. Every "AI did X" headline deserves an asterisk: what was the actual system, and what was the wrapper?
🛠️ Builder's takeaway:

Three different announcements. One quiet theme:
The line between "AI capability" and "AI infrastructure" is gone.
Princeton's result says it cleanest: call it "AI" all you want, but a 514-Elo LLM isn't a chess player — it's a planner using a chess player. The product you ship isn't the model. It's the stack around the model.

The teams that win 2026 aren't the ones with the best model. They're the ones who clearly know where their model ends and their system begins.
