©Frederik Kraft, September evening in Dyrehaven, 1854
Kraft was officially the son of Adam Gottlob Severin Kraft and Sophie Frederikke Tronier, but was in reality one of King Christian VIII’s illegitimate children together with Sophie Frederikke Tronier.
Kraft should have been a merchant, but his desire for art prevailed, and in 1838 he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1847 he competed for the Neuhausen Prize, but did not win the prize. He came to Rome at the end of 1851, and it seems that the study of Italian nature made the most beneficial effect on the development of his talent.

O Magnum Mysterium
Victoria
"O Magnum Mysterium"
- Polyphony by Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548 - 1611)
Latin
O magnum mysterium,
et admirabile sacramentum,
ut animalia viderent Dominum natum,
iacentem in praesepio!
O beata virgo, cuius viscera
meruerunt portare
Dominum Iesum Christum.
Alleluia!
English
O great mystery,
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the newborn Lord,
lying in a manger!
O blessed virgin, whose womb
was worthy to bear
the Lord Jesus Christ.
Alleluia!
