The 3-4-3/3-5-2 Comeback

This system used to be exciting to watch under Conte and also during the initial stages of the Tuchel era. It also served Potter well during both his Brighton and Osternd reigns. On saturday after more than 2months of trial and failures with back four, it seems like Potter is shifting back to his tried and tested. There is nothing wrong with this system in terms of making it exciting. It's just the application and personnel that matters.

Can it Work now with new signings? Can it be better?

Before new signings, we used to struggle on the right whenever Reece was injured.. Deep midfield was also a slight issue. But the biggest challenge was in the 2supporting strikers behind the main Man where sterling and Mount technical inefficiencies were catastrophic. We also had issues with LCB where we gambled plenty of times with Cucurella

Its clear Chelsea is more dangerous with Reece as a flying wingback rather than as Fullback. Resumption of back three could favour James. Badiashille will also address the LCB role adequately and Koulibaly has shown glimpses of what defined him at Napoli. The Central Midfield area has been strengthened by arrival of Enzo. Kante and Zakaria comeback will only make this area stronger.

What was required and what we lacked with the supporting strikers was the ability to move through closed spaces in attack. Joao was born for this and a certain upgrade of what we had before. Infact a player with holding abilities like Joao there would allow deployment of Sterling who is more direct to flourish alongside him. He can also play as the other striker in 3-5-2 therefore allowing deploying Mount in a midfield three providing both stability and efficiency.

The challenge with reverting to this shape however will be deployment of both Mudryk and Noni. These two would struggle as supporting strikers because of their Style of play. Unless Potter deploys 3-5-2 with them as wingers, there is no way on earth they will be efficient behind the main striker. Playing them as wingers will however demand deployment of solid 3 midfielders with serious workrate and defensive attributes. Otherwise it would leave the team so exposed defensively

While most fans had desired change of shape, For now what matters to potter is what would give him stability and results. By reverting to a back three, Potter has a great chance of attaining just that. Could have done the same and bet my ass on it if I was him too
