Understanding Ziyech & Pulisic Puzzle

Before the games started I said openly I understood what Potter was trying to do and that was a good line up for the match. And I also said that I expected Pulisic to come in later to help unlock Newcastle after containment. And it did happen immediately after the second half. The discussion was on general tactical formation and not the tactical approach and tweeking for extra man in second half was only a variation of the approach on the formation. Without emotions it would be Common sense again.

So the question is why wouldn't we start Pulisic and Ziyech from the start against strong opponents? wouldn't it help us be more attack focussed. The answer is both yes and No. In a normally well balanced team that should be the case. In this team is a big NO. It's called football dynamics and the quest to find right balance between defence and attack. And as one admin pointed out here recently that is due to Incompetence from Marina in assembling a more dynamic team.

For those who like throwing Brighton case study on our faces, If you compare Trossards, March and Mitomas defensive ethics to Pulisic or Ziyech you'd understand why. Their defensive and general work ethics to help the team in defensive transition is what Ziyech and Pulisic lack. This is also not helped by our deep midfield player profiles and composition of J5, Kova and RLC. Chelsea currently lacks a solid ball winning midfielder and having these three plus the two defensively ineffectual wingers alone would leave the team utterly exposed.

Otherwise with solid defensive midfielder like Kante, Rice or Caicedo behind them, you'd expect a more offensive team with yet a solid foundation to make them flourish without too much worrying about the defensive side of the game

So this is not necessarily about them but ineffectiveness in composition of the whole team.

As at now, this Chelsea team is so imbalanced with half baked players that would make such an experiment a disaster. Expecting the same level of attacking freedom while having no outright ball winning midfielder behind in real world is impossible. In a virtual simulation management game though it's something else.

Being in a process doesn't mean you lose every game. Being in a process doesn't mean your allowed to finish 8th place. Being in a process isn't an excuse for poor lineups, strange tactical decisions and bad performances. Sarri was a project manager and came 3rd. No excuses.

Lampard had a transfer ban and came fourth. Tuchel took over a team 9th in the league and came fourth + winning the champions league. Don't care if it's a project or not. We need to see the process itself and by that , we mean it needs to change early next year

There’s a reason why Tuchel won the CL with this squad & controlled every single one of those KO games in terms of chances created.Chelsea’s attack is/was an issue but Tuchel could cope. He needed that midfield upgrading to give him what injury-free Kanté/Kova gave him back then.
