Maresca wants Chelsea to sign a central defender who is good at passing the ball, to work well with Wesley Fofana and also help when Fofana is injured.

Chelsea haven’t done well without Fofana, because Maresca thinks Fofana’s skills are important for the way he wants the team to play – especially starting attacks from the back.

Huijsen is good with both feet and has shown this season at Bournemouth that he’s a strong passer from defence. He could play on the left side of Fofana, or take Fofana’s place when he’s not fit.

Fofana is out for the rest of this season with a hamstring injury, and because he often gets injured, Chelsea need to be ready for him to miss games next season too.

Besides a defender, Maresca also wants a new striker. The club might also go after a new winger. And as reported by Telegraph Sport, Chelsea will review their goalkeepers this summer to decide if they need to buy a new one or stick with two from Sánchez, Jorgensen, Petrovic, or Penders.

Chelsea are looking to hire a new scout to help find young goalkeepers, aged 13 to 21, who could one day play for their first team.

They want someone who knows all the top young goalkeepers in that age group. The job includes making weekly video reports, as directed by Ross Turnbull, and helping gather background info on potential targets across the UK — even using social media.
