Captain Reece James has undergone successful minor knee surgery.

The 26-year-old was absent from Saturday’s 5-1 victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge while medical assessments took place following the injury suffered in training. Those assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action.

Reece has already begun his road to recovery and will be supported by the club’s medical department at Cobham during this rehabilitation phase.

Everyone at Chelsea wishes Reece a speedy recovery and will support him on his road to return.

🗣️ Xabi Alonso ahead of Chelsea’s match against Everton [A] in the Premier League:

🏥 𝐎𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬:

“He [Emmanuel Emegha] is not available for tomorrow; he felt something yesterday [Thursday], a little thing. He is going to be training next week but still not 100 per cent fit to be playing in tomorrow’s game.

“When he is fit, he is very special. He is 1.95 metres, is quick, attacks space, and is a threat. Unfortunately, he’s had little things and he hasn’t been available.

“[Jamie Gittens] is not yet [ready], it’s still a few weeks.

“We are all disappointed, and especially for him [Reece James].

“He wanted to have a good start after the international break, but in the last training session he picked up an injury. We wanted to be cautious and wait for the result of the tests.

“I wish him the best recovery. We won’t set timelines, but we expect him to be out for several weeks. It’s not going to be short [his knee injury]. Whether it’s before or after Christmas then time will tell. It needs to be done properly.”

💪 𝐎𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧:

“It’s going to be a tough game.

“We are looking forward to this game, intensity, high-demand game, high-tempo. I haven't been in the stadium, but they've told me it's a nice one with good atmosphere, so we are looking forward.

“We know what it takes to win Premier League games away in tough stadiums, in stadiums that they create a great energy, emotional, but we are able to deal with that playing, but as well competing well, and for sure, the experience for Brentford is not forgotten.”

🗣️ Xabi Alonso on Chelsea striker Joao Pedro:

💪 𝐎𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐝𝐫𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧:

“That’s what we want, that’s what he wants. It’s not just about right now that he has scored five goals.

“From the first day of pre-season we spoke about that, the next step that he wanted, and he started really well with the pre-season and this season as well. So it’s about continuing.

“When you want to become a top striker in this league, you need to be ready in each game to have your impact. He’s having it and we need that he keeps going.

“So far, and before this, I could see him scoring lots of goals, and he’s in a good moment. He will have a very good season because he’s hungry for that and he’s scoring goals.

“He wants to be in the box and wants to help the team around the box as well. He’s very complete. I really like the way he plays and the way he’s connecting with his team-mates.”
