But the Black Cats have made it clear Xhaka was never for sale.
Xhaka was initially attracted by the prospect of reuniting with Xabi Alonso, having enjoyed a successful spell under him at Bayer Leverkusen, and was therefore open to exploring the opportunity.
However, following discussions with the club, Xhaka has reaffirmed his commitment to Sunderland and now wishes to remain on Wearside.
The opportunity to lead Sunderland in European competition next season, together with the clubโs long-term ambition and trajectory, were decisive factors in his decision.
