“It’s obviously a really difficult situation. I think Enzo [Fernandez] quickly acknowledged he did wrong, put his hand up and apologised to the club, the team and the people offended.

“I have spoken to Enzo and everyone involved but those conversations have to stay in house. He hasn’t arrived yet so I don’t know if there is anything to amend. I hope everyone will be on the same page and we can move on from the situation.”

“If I am honest, the last 16 months have been tough and frustrating. I am really excited and feel I am in a good place to find my rhythm again.

“I kind of had a good summer. I do what I always do: enjoy a bit and work a bit, to come back into good shape for pre-season.

“Of course, I am definitely one to push the boundaries. Sometimes that’s caused problems for myself and the team [for example getting sent off]. That’s something I am trying to get better at.

Both clubs are discussing a fee between £16.8m and £21m for the Danish goalkeeper, who has a £38m release clause.
