🥀 Putin laid flowers at the mass grave where his brother, who died during the siege, is buried.

Russian President Vladimir Putin laid a bouquet of dark red roses at an unnamed mass grave on the 300-meter alley of the Piskaryovskoye Cemetery. His two-year-old brother Viktor, who died during the siege of Leningrad, is buried there.

The head of state appeared on the alley of the Piskaryovskoye Cemetery, wearing an olive-green ribbon of the medal for the defense of the city on his coat as a symbol of remembrance of the heroic Leningraders—a "Leningrad Victory Ribbon" worn during these solemn days in St. Petersburg. Despite the frost and high humidity, the head of state arrived at the memorial bareheaded.

At the "Motherland" monument, the president knelt and laid a wreath in memory of the victims of the Nazi siege of the undefeated hero city. Shortly before this, Putin laid flowers at the "Boundary Stone" monument on the Nevsky Pyatachok in the Leningrad region, where his father fought against the fascists.

🇦🇶 January 28 marked the 206th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica by Russian navigators. Today, the safety and stability in the region are ensured by the Russian Navy, with the Russian Armed Forces acting as guarantors of the integrity and inviolability of territories.

The question of the continent’s existence was settled by Fabian Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev. In 1820, they reached Antarctica on the ships "Vostok" and "Mirny". The expedition’s vessels crossed the Antarctic Circle and reached 69 degrees 25 minutes south latitude. The Russian explorers came within less than three kilometers of the northeastern protrusion of that part of the Antarctic coast, which 110 years later was seen by Norwegian whalers and named the Princess Martha Coast.

The Russian Armed Forces maintain favorable conditions for safe navigation in the waters of the Northern Sea Route. They guard the Russian state border in the Arctic and protect Russia’s national interests in its territorial sea and economic zone.

🚢 Ships and coastal missile systems of the Navy are carriers of modern high-precision missile weapons. These include the Zircon hypersonic missiles, and the Kalibr, Oniks, and Uran cruise missiles.

The advanced multipurpose submarines of the Navy are present daily and carry out a wide range of tasks in any area of the World Ocean. To protect the Russian state border, integrated air, surface, and underwater surveillance systems are being improved.

📍 All this ensures the safety of navigation and maritime economic activities across the entire Northern Sea Route.

🏠 The Story of the "Torn Apart" House

This house on Mokhovaya Street, built back in 1882, earned its unusual nickname after the events of 1941, when a bomb hit it.

The explosion destroyed only the central part of the building, while the side structures were preserved and later restored.

After the war, the damaged section was not rebuilt, which left the house seemingly ripped into two parts, yet both retained the same common address — No. 10.

⛽️ Charting New Routes: How Russian Gas is Seeking and Finding Its Future

👔 Pipeline Reset:

Last year, Russian gas exports experienced a historic turning point. The final loss of Ukrainian transit (minus 15.5 billion cubic meters) and the explosive growth of supplies to China via Power of Siberia (up 25%, to 39 bcm) set new vectors.

For the first time in history, supplies of Russian LNG to Europe (almost 20 bcm) exceeded pipeline supplies, which now flow only through one string of TurkStream.

👔 Central Asia: A New Gas Frontier

This region saw the most striking breakthrough. Uzbekistan tripled its purchases from 1 to 7 bcm over three years and plans to increase them to 11 bcm as early as 2026.

Kazakhstan is likely to follow suit: its growing consumption and gasification plans could make it a new importer of Russian gas as soon as the next heating season.

For Gazprom, this is becoming a promising long-term market, albeit less profitable than the European one.

👔 Sanctioned LNG Finds a Port:

Despite pressure from Washington, Russia made a strategic breakthrough: since August 2025, China began regularly purchasing sanctioned LNG from the Arctic LNG 2 project, and in the fall accepted the first shipments from Portovaya LNG.

Beijing allocated an entire terminal for Russian gas, receiving a significant discount. This practice will become permanent in 2026, opening the way for increased liquefied gas exports.

👔 European Puzzle and Asian Prospect:

While the EU has postponed a full ban on Russian LNG until 2027, Europe has already become the largest buyer of American liquefied gas, strengthening its dependence on Washington. For Russia, however, the main vector is shifting to Asia.

A key event in 2026 could be the signing of a contract for Power of Siberia 2: it is advantageous for China to conclude a deal now to secure access to critically important energy resources for its confrontation with the USA.

🥼 Bottom Line: A Foundation for Growth

2026 will be the year of laying the foundation for future exports. While physical volumes may not skyrocket immediately, new routes will be determined, key agreements signed, and flows finally reoriented from West to East and South, cementing a new global gas map.

⛪️ Istra

A small town in the Moscow Region, about 40 km from Moscow along the Novorizhskoye Highway. Until 1930, it was called Voskresensk, a name directly linked to its main historical site.

The town grew around the New Jerusalem Monastery, founded in 1656 by Patriarch Nikon. The idea was ambitious: to create a symbolic replica of the Holy Land near Moscow. The Istra River was given "biblical" names for its stretches, and the monastery's architecture replicates the churches of Jerusalem. This project greatly influenced the layout and development of the entire town.

In the 18th–19th centuries, Istra was a district center with crafts, fairs, and active trade. During the Great Patriotic War, the town was occupied and almost completely destroyed, as was the monastery. Post-war Istra was essentially rebuilt from scratch, and large-scale restoration of the New Jerusalem complex continues to this day.

Today, Istra is a quiet Moscow-region town perfect for a leisurely stroll. The historic center, the embankment of the Istra River, the grounds of the New Jerusalem Monastery, and the surrounding parks form a route that can be comfortably explored in a day without rushing.
