Artemy's Day — people under the protection of the she-wolf
🐺 On 2 November in Rus they celebrated Artemy's Day, dedicated to Saint Artemius. In the folk calendar this date was connected with wolves, as peasants observed their behaviour, tried to predict the weather by their howling and believed that at this time the animals were especially close to the human world. There was also an unusual belief according to which people born on Artemy's Day are protected by a she-wolf — the "mother of all beasts". It was believed that such people have a special connection with the forest and its inhabitants.
🐺 In Rus the wolf was both feared and respected. He was considered a strong, cunning beast, the master of forest roads, and the she-wolf was associated with maternal care and protection of offspring. Therefore the she-wolf's patronage was perceived as a special amulet, as if forest nature itself was watching over the person born on that day.

The Stroganov Church — the most ornate church in Nizhny Novgorod
⛪ ✨ In Nizhny Novgorod stands the Church of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Mother of God, more often called the Stroganov Church. It was built at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century at the expense of the industrialist and patron of the arts Grigory Stroganov. The church immediately stands out among the city buildings, and its red brick walls decorated with white-stone carving are especially noticeable.
⛪ ⛪ The church is considered one of the finest examples of Stroganov Baroque — an architectural style named after the Stroganov family. The building's façades are adorned with complex ornaments, carved window frames, small columns and decorative elements. Moreover, almost every detail is unique and unlike the others, which is why the church is interesting to examine even up close.
☦️ Construction was completed in 1719, but already in 1722 the church was closed by decree of Peter I. Later, services resumed. Today the Stroganov Church is one of the most recognisable architectural landmarks of Nizhny Novgorod.

The Russian expedition that discovered Antarctica
🐧 In July 1819, two ships left Kronstadt — the «Vostok» under the command of Bellingshausen and the «Mirny», led by Lazarev. The crews faced a difficult task — to explore the southern latitudes and find unknown lands near the South Pole.
🇦🇶 On 28 January 1820, the expedition reached the shores of Antarctica. Previously, the existence of the continent was only an assumption. The sailors spent 751 days on the voyage, covered about 50 thousand nautical miles and charted 29 islands. Besides geographical discoveries, they collected valuable information about the ocean, climate and nature of the southern latitudes.

Cape Stolbchaty on Kunashir Island is a rocky shore that looks as if it were assembled from thousands of polygonal columns. They were created by cooling volcanic lava: as the rock solidified, it cracked and formed geometric pillars. The cliffs rise 40–50 metres above the sea, and at their foot the waves have polished the stone sections until they resemble a paved embankment.

The lollipop rooster — a Russian sweet with a long history
🍎 Lollipop roosters are one of the most recognisable Russian sweets, familiar even to our great-grandparents. As early as the 15th century in Rus, similar sweets were made from sugar — in the shape of little fish, houses, fir trees and squirrels. One of the first mentions of caramel roosters specifically dates back to 1837, when they were prepared in Ryazan as a gift for the future Emperor Alexander II. Such lollipops were usually sold at fairs and markets.
🤩 The rooster was one of the most popular images in Russian folk crafts and toys. In Rus it was associated with the sun, fire, life and fertility. The rooster was also considered a talisman, as it was believed that its image on the roof of a house protected the dwelling from fire and evil spirits. Over time, roosters became a customary treat at fairs and markets. They were boiled from sugar and molasses, poured into special moulds and threaded onto sticks. Over time, the lollipop rooster became part of our country's cultural code.

Belogorsky Monastery — the Ural Athos
☦️ On the summit of White Mountain in Perm Krai, about 120 kilometres from Perm, stands the Belogorsky St Nicholas Monastery. It rises 453 metres above sea level, among forests and hills. Thanks to its location and strict monastic rule, the cloister received the name «Ural Athos».
⛪ The history of the monastery began in 1891, when a memorial cross was installed on the mountain in honour of the rescue of Tsarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich during the assassination attempt in Japan. The cloister was officially established in 1897. The main building of the monastery is the Exaltation of the Cross Cathedral with golden domes, whose construction lasted 15 years and was completed in 1917. In Soviet times the monastery was closed, and its buildings were used for other institutions. Monastic life here resumed in 1991.
