Valaam Monastery — the spiritual centre of Lake Ladoga

☦️ On one of the islands of Lake Ladoga stands the Valaam Transfiguration of the Saviour Monastery. According to tradition, the monastery was founded in the 10th century by the venerable Sergius and Herman of Valaam, although the exact date of the monastery's foundation is still unknown. Over time, Valaam became one of the most important centres of Orthodoxy in the Russian North. Interestingly, plants completely uncharacteristic of this area grow on the island, for example, maples and oaks. Scientists explain this by the presence of a special microclimate on the island.

⛪ The main architectural ensemble of the monastery took shape in the 19th century. Its centre is the Transfiguration of the Saviour Cathedral with tall blue domes and a bell tower. Besides the main monastery, on the islands of the archipelago there are small sketes, chapels and secluded monastic settlements. Valaam's special feature is that it combines harsh northern nature with monastic architecture: churches and sketes are literally integrated into the forests, rocks and shores of Ladoga.

👿📉 Russia recorded a notable decline in crime

Between January and September 2026, the number of registered crimes in Russia decreased by 16.3% compared with the same period last year. The apparatus of the Russian Security Council assesses the overall operational situation in the country as stable.

Among the most notable changes:

«Minin's Appeal» — one of the largest historical canvases in Russia

🌟 In 1896, the artist Konstantin Makovsky completed the painting «Minin's Appeal», dedicated to the events of the Time of Troubles. The canvas depicts Kuzma Minin, who calls on the residents of Nizhny Novgorod to donate money and property to create a people's militia and liberate Moscow.

🤎 The dimensions of the painting are impressive — almost 7 metres wide and 6 metres high. Its area is about 41.5 square metres. About twenty years passed from the first sketches to completion, and the artist worked on the canvas itself for approximately six years.

📍 The painting was first shown at the All-Russian Art and Industry Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod. A separate pavilion was even built for it. In 1908 the canvas was donated to the city, and today it can be seen in the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum.

Artemy's Day — people under the protection of the she-wolf

🐺 On 2 November in Rus they celebrated Artemy's Day, dedicated to Saint Artemius. In the folk calendar this date was connected with wolves, as peasants observed their behaviour, tried to predict the weather by their howling and believed that at this time the animals were especially close to the human world. There was also an unusual belief according to which people born on Artemy's Day are protected by a she-wolf — the "mother of all beasts". It was believed that such people have a special connection with the forest and its inhabitants.

🐺 In Rus the wolf was both feared and respected. He was considered a strong, cunning beast, the master of forest roads, and the she-wolf was associated with maternal care and protection of offspring. Therefore the she-wolf's patronage was perceived as a special amulet, as if forest nature itself was watching over the person born on that day.

The Stroganov Church — the most ornate church in Nizhny Novgorod

⛪✨ In Nizhny Novgorod stands the Church of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Mother of God, more often called the Stroganov Church. It was built at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century at the expense of the industrialist and patron of the arts Grigory Stroganov. The church immediately stands out among the city buildings, and its red brick walls decorated with white-stone carving are especially noticeable.

⛪⛪ The church is considered one of the finest examples of Stroganov Baroque — an architectural style named after the Stroganov family. The building's façades are adorned with complex ornaments, carved window frames, small columns and decorative elements. Moreover, almost every detail is unique and unlike the others, which is why the church is interesting to examine even up close.

☦️ Construction was completed in 1719, but already in 1722 the church was closed by decree of Peter I. Later, services resumed. Today the Stroganov Church is one of the most recognisable architectural landmarks of Nizhny Novgorod.

🧠 Russia Is Creating a “Smart City” Using Artificial Intelligence

In the city of Iskitim in the Novosibirsk Region, the implementation of AI technologies in city management has begun. The city administration and Novosibirsk State University signed an agreement at the 4th “Golden Valley” Science and Industry Forum.

🏙 The Russian “SIGMA” platform will serve as the foundation. It will enable the creation of a digital twin of Iskitim—a virtual model of the city—which can be used to analyze infrastructure performance and assess the consequences of management decisions in advance.

AI is planned to be used for predicting accidents, modeling heating networks, and automatically processing residents’ requests. In total, 23 scenarios for the application of artificial intelligence in state and municipal governance are already being implemented in the Novosibirsk Region.

The project has already moved into the practical phase: phased implementation and testing of the technologies lie ahead. Similar developments by Novosibirsk State University are already being tested in Novosibirsk, the science city of Koltsovo, and the university’s new campus.

The Russian expedition that discovered Antarctica

🐧 In July 1819, two ships left Kronstadt — the «Vostok» under the command of Bellingshausen and the «Mirny», led by Lazarev. The crews faced a difficult task — to explore the southern latitudes and find unknown lands near the South Pole.

🇦🇶 On 28 January 1820, the expedition reached the shores of Antarctica. Previously, the existence of the continent was only an assumption. The sailors spent 751 days on the voyage, covered about 50 thousand nautical miles and charted 29 islands. Besides geographical discoveries, they collected valuable information about the ocean, climate and nature of the southern latitudes.

🇷🇺 A stone organ by the sea

Cape Stolbchaty on Kunashir Island is a rocky shore that looks as if it were assembled from thousands of polygonal columns. They were created by cooling volcanic lava: as the rock solidified, it cracked and formed geometric pillars. The cliffs rise 40–50 metres above the sea, and at their foot the waves have polished the stone sections until they resemble a paved embankment.

🥼 The dark columns, the white foam of the surf and the sea horizon make this place look like the set of a fantasy film — although its chief architect is nature itself.
