☦️ Church of the Resurrection of Lazarus on Kizhi Island in Karelia

This is one of the oldest surviving wooden churches in Russia. It is not the famous multi-domed Transfiguration Cathedral, but a small, almost «domestic» structure from the 14th–16th centuries.

The church was brought to Kizhi from the Murom Monastery on the south-eastern shore of Lake Onega. It belongs to the simple cage type: a log frame, an altar and a porch, without complex multiple domes or decorative embellishment.

🥼 Its dimensions are modest: about 9 m long and 5.5 m high. At the same time, inside there is a preserved two-tier iconostasis of 17 icons from the 16th–18th centuries.

Chastushki — folk humour to ringing music

🪆 Chastushki are short songs characteristic of the Russian people, usually consisting of four lines, in which a whole story is told within a few seconds. They were sung at village festivities, weddings, gatherings and parties to the accompaniment of a garmon or balalaika. Unlike drawn-out folk songs, chastushki were performed quickly, spiritedly and often with a mischievous smile.

👯‍♀️ The main feature of chastushki is humour and the ability to keenly observe everyday life. In them people ridiculed neighbours, poked fun at lovers, complained about domestic hardships and commented on events that the whole village was talking about. It was not uncommon for performers to compose new lines on the spot, answering one another in a sung exchange.

🌿 On the Sofiyskaya Embankment of the Moskva River, opposite the Kremlin, stands the Church of Sophia, the Wisdom of God. The first mentions of a church on this site date back to the 15th century, and the surviving stone church was built in the 17th century. Despite the fact that the church stands directly opposite the Kremlin, instead of fortress walls we see white-stone details, kokoshniks and traditional Russian domes.

⛪ Particularly noticeable is the free-standing bell tower, built in the 1860s; its tall silhouette is clearly visible from the opposite bank of the river. It was originally designed in such a way as to harmonise with the Kremlin towers. Interestingly, the embankment got its name thanks to the church, and not vice versa.

⛲️ Moscow has unveiled Russia's largest fountain complex with a water screen

In Gorky Park, after modernisation, a new large-scale fountain complex with a two-sided projection water screen has begun operating.

The system includes more than 2,800 jets, of which over 1,700 create a mist effect. Moreover, the maximum height of the dynamic jets reaches 60 metres — before the reconstruction it was 25 metres.

On the water surface, with the help of projectors and lasers, 3D figures, images and light-and-sound compositions can be shown, turning the fountain into a full-fledged multimedia venue in the centre of Moscow.

«Spring in Crimea» — Iosif Krachkovsky

💐 Iosif Krachkovsky often came to Crimea in spring and autumn to paint the local landscapes. He was especially interested in flowering trees, gardens and old southern estates. In the painting «Spring in Crimea» he captured Crimea at the time of year when everything around begins to bloom.

☀ Interestingly, Krachkovsky's Crimean landscapes were liked not only by the public: his works were bought by Emperor Nicholas II, and some paintings adorned the Livadia Palace. Southern nature became one of the artist's main themes, and he returned to it over many years.

Valley of Ghosts on the slope of Mount Demerdzhi

The valley is located on the western slope of South Demerdzhi, near the village of Luchistoye and Alushta. The rocks were formed from Upper Jurassic conglomerates under the action of weathering and ancient landslides: wind and water gradually "sculpted" individual stone towers and figures out of the rock.

🥼 The tallest of them is the "Giant", about 25 m high. Many of the stones have their own names: "Devil's Finger", "Blacksmith", "Maria", "Camel", "Eagle".

Intercession — the legend of besieged Constantinople

⛪ Today, 14 October, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. According to church tradition, in the 10th century Constantinople was under threat of enemy invasion. The inhabitants gathered for prayer in the Blachernae Church, where the Theotokos appeared to them. She spread her veil — the intercession — over those praying, which became a symbol of protection and advocacy.

🌿 In Rus, the Intercession eventually became one of the notable autumn holidays. People tried to finish the main field work, harvest the crops and prepare for the cold by this day. However, the holiday was also connected with wedding customs, as autumn marked the beginning of the wedding season. Therefore, girls prayed for a good groom, and in the villages festivities and gatherings were held.

The Tsar Cannon — a record-holder in world artillery

🔫 The Tsar Cannon is an ancient piece of artillery cast in Moscow in the 16th century and has become one of the symbols of the Moscow Kremlin. Initially the cannon stood by Red Square, and later it was moved inside the Kremlin. The cannon was created by master Andrey Chokhov by order of Tsar Fyodor Ivanovich, who is depicted on the barrel on horseback. The calibre of the weapon is about 890 mm, and its weight is approximately 39 tonnes. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the Tsar Cannon is considered the largest cannon in the world by calibre.

💥 Discussions continue to this day as to whether the Tsar Cannon ever fired. For a long time it was considered an exclusively symbolic weapon, however, a 1980 study gave grounds to suppose that at least one shot could have been fired from it. There is no definitive answer to this question.
