🇷🇺 The Mariinsky Theatre is one of the leading musical theatres not only in Russia but in the whole world. Its history dates back to 1783, when a company for opera and drama performances was established by decree of Empress Catherine II. Its stage was one of the largest in the world, and the building itself was described by contemporaries as "the most magnificent in Europe".

🇷🇺Throughout its entire history, the Mariinsky Theatre has remained a symbol of Russian culture and a recognised centre of world musical art. Its stage has hosted the world premieres of operas by Glinka, Verdi, Tchaikovsky and many other composers. The theatre is rightfully considered the pride of the country.

🤍 The land that steams

In Kamchatka there is a place where the earth literally breathes steam and boiling water — the Valley of Geysers in the Kronotsky Nature Reserve.

The Valley of Geysers lies in the east of Kamchatka, about 180 kilometres from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, in the canyon of the Geysernaya River. It is one of the largest geyser fields in the world and one of the peninsula's best‑known natural attractions.

Within a relatively small area — around 4 to 6 square kilometres — are concentrated dozens of large geysers, hot springs, mud pots, steam vents and thermal lakes. Because of this, the valley looks like a place where the surface of the earth is constantly moving and pulsating: now steam erupts, now the noise of a water spout is heard, now a thick white cloud hangs over the riverbed.

🌅 Nizhny Novgorod is the capital of sunsets. The city stands at the confluence of the Oka and the Volga, and the sunsets here come about thanks to the open horizon and the height of the riverbank. The view from the Chkalov Stairs or from the cable car takes in both the river and the city, and it really is noticeably different from flatland cities.

🌅 Locals stopped paying attention to it long ago, but tourists almost always linger on the embankment before eight in the evening. The light changes over the course of about thirty minutes, then it quickly gets dark and the bridges light up.

🇷🇺 Sabantuy is an ancient Turkic holiday marking the end of spring field work, still widely celebrated by the Tatars, Bashkirs and other peoples of the Volga region. Its name translates as “festival of the plough”, and the main idea is the celebration of the land, labour and a bountiful harvest. The festivities take place in summer, usually on an open meadow, and gather the whole village, from the youngest to the oldest.

🇷🇺 The highlight of the programme is the merry sporting contests: national belt wrestling (köräsh), running with a yoke and buckets, climbing a tall pole for a prize, stick pulling and sack fighting with hay‑filled bags. All this is accompanied by music, singing and treats. Sabantuy remains a symbol of unity, daring and generosity.
