Teriberka: where the road ends and the cold sea begins

🗺 Today, Teriberka is one of the most sought‑after spots on the map of Russia. The harsh Barents Sea, the endless tundra, and the skeletons of old ships attract travelers like a magnet. But it wasn't always like this: just ten years ago, it was a quiet, dying village. Everything changed with Andrey Zvyagintsev's film:

🍿 Leviathan. Released in 2014, the film won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar — and also introduced the world to the cold, mesmerizing landscapes of Teriberka.

✨ What is worth seeing?

You can start with the Batareisky waterfall, which roars all year round and falls directly into the Barents Sea. Nearby is the «Ship Graveyard»: few vessels remain, but one hull still sticks out of the water like a ghost. Further on is Lake Mogilnoye. This is an almost mystical place: its water is layered in salinity like a cake, and at a depth of several meters lives a polar jellyfish. Nearby is the abandoned lighthouse at Dalnie Zelentsy, from where you can see only the sea and the sky.

Did you know? Teriberka was founded in the 16th century as a seasonal fishing camp — permanent houses appeared there in 1608. And the local inhabitants, the Pomors, did not burn old ships but left them by the water, covering them with sand and using them as piers.

🌲 Scientists from Skoltech have made a significant step forward in forest protection by developing an innovative information system based on artificial intelligence and satellite data. This system not only allows assessing the current state of forests but also predicting forest fires with up to 87% accuracy.

🌿 What does this mean for us? First, it will help respond quickly to threats and minimize damage from forest fires. Second, it will become an important tool for ecologists and foresters in their work to preserve and restore forest ecosystems.

🚩 The parade marking the 81st anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War took place on Red Square in Moscow.

For the first time, the parade was commanded by the Commander‑in‑Chief of the Russian Ground Forces, Colonel General Andrey Mordvichev, and was received by Defense Minister Andrey Belousov.

The infantry column included servicemen from higher military educational institutions of all branches and types of the Russian Armed Forces, and for the first time, representatives of the DPRK also took part in the parade.

🇷🇺 Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a speech. The head of state noted that the decisive contribution to the defeat of Nazism was made by the Soviet people, who saved both their country and the entire world. This feat, the president emphasized, will never be forgotten.

During the broadcast, footage of the work of the Russian Armed Forces, including unmanned systems troops, in the special military operation zone was shown, and Russia's nuclear triad was highlighted.

The parade in Moscow concluded with an airshow. The aerobatic teams «Russian Knights» on Su‑30s and «Swifts» on MiG‑29s performed the «Kubinka Diamond» aerobatic maneuver, passing at a minimum distance from each other. Subsequently, six Su‑25 attack aircraft painted the sky over the capital in the colors of the Russian flag.

🥀 At the end of the parade, Putin, together with leaders of other countries, laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden.

The memory of participants of the Great Patriotic War was honored by the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, accompanied by his son Nikolai; the President of Laos, Thongloun Sisoulith; the Supreme Ruler of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim; the Presidents of South Ossetia, Alan Gagloyev, and Abkhazia, Badra Gunba; and the President of Republika Srpska, Sinisa Karan.

🎗️Every family had its own war, but the Victory is one

There is no family in Russia that the Great Patriotic War passed by. That is why May 9 is a day that touches the deepest chords of the soul, even 80 years later.
This terrible war claimed 27 million lives. Half of them — women, the elderly, and children — were civilians deliberately killed by the Nazis.

🙏 Leningrad endured 872 days of blockade, over 600 thousand deaths from starvation. In Stalingrad, Soviet soldiers went through 200 days of hell. Battles were fought not for districts or streets, but for every house and every floor. The city was completely destroyed; military vehicles could not pass; it was essentially hand‑to‑hand combat. Moscow also stood stoically in the autumn of 1941, when the enemy was 30 km from the Kremlin. «Russia is vast, but there is nowhere to retreat — Moscow is behind us.»

Country after country — Poland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Greece, Yugoslavia — capitulated within weeks or even days. The USSR held on. The Soviet soldier stood his ground near Moscow, did not surrender Stalingrad, did not abandon the defense of Leningrad. Our soldiers charged into attacks under machine‑gun fire, threw themselves onto embrasures, blew themselves up with grenades together with the fascists.

💪 The parade on Red Square and the «Immortal Regiment» are first and foremost a ritual of remembrance. Every soldier in the parade salutes not the leadership — he salutes the grandfather who brought victory to the country.

🔥Just think: if our great‑grandfathers had faltered near Moscow, surrendered at Stalingrad, or abandoned Leningrad to its fate, none of what we know would exist. Not our cities, not our families, not ourselves. Their heroism is our honor by birthright. And we will protect it to the end.
