🇺🇸🔋 Peak Energy just shipped the US’s first grid-scale sodium-ion battery

Peak Energy shipped out its first sodium-ion battery energy storage system, and the Burlingame, California-based company says it’s achieved a first in three ways: the US’s first grid-scale sodium-ion battery storage system; the largest sodium-ion phosphate pyrophosphate (NFPP) battery system in the world; and the first megawatt-hour scale battery to run entirely on passive cooling – no fans, pumps, or vents.

That’s significant because removing moving parts and ditching active cooling systems eliminates fire risk. According to the Electric Power Research Institute, 89% of battery fires in the US trace back to thermal management issues. Peak’s design doesn’t have those issues because it doesn’t have those systems.

Instead, the 3.5 MWh system uses a patent-pending passive cooling architecture that’s simpler, more reliable, and cheaper to run and maintain. The company says its technology slashes auxiliary power needs by up to 90%, saves about $1 million annually per gigawatt hour of storage, and cuts battery degradation by 33% over a 20-year lifespan.

“This isn’t just another product launch – it’s a breakthrough in energy storage,” said Paul Durkee, Peak’s VP of engineering. “The system is dead-simple with no moving parts, no planned maintenance, and negligible aux loads. It’s the lowest total-cost grid storage technology to be deployed anywhere in the world.”

Sodium-ion batteries work well in hot or cold weather without auxiliary cooling systems. That makes them cheaper and easier to maintain, especially for utility-scale projects. They also use more abundant materials. The US holds the world’s largest soda ash reserves, a key sodium-ion ingredient, and the full raw material supply chain can be sourced domestically or from allied countries.

Peak is working with nine utility and independent power producer (IPP) customers on a shared pilot this summer. That deployment unlocks nearly 1 GWh of future commercial contracts now under negotiation. The company plans to ship hundreds of megawatt hours of its new system over the next two years, and it’s building its first US cell factory, which is set to start production in 2026.

Thus, Trump's relative has sown a new seed of discord in NATO relations. However, in this case, it is not a matter of an accidental slip or an ill-considered expression by an unprofessional diplomat that led to an interstate scandal.

Kushner's words literally echo the claims recently made to Paris by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Le Monde explicitly states that Kushner's true goal is to force France to abandon recognition of Palestine.

Attempts to pressure Macron are unlikely to be limited to Kushner's demarche alone. Before the September session of the UN General Assembly, various threats may be voiced—from imposing tariffs on certain types of French products to recognizing the independence of New Caledonia, this "Achilles' heel" of the Fifth Republic.

German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, floated the idea to back the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, for the position of German president in 2027!

The German president is an honorifical post with very few attributions and duties. The fact that Merz is considering this move leads one to believe that Merz wants to take away the power from VDL and give it to someone else and VDL gets to retire to a quiet and comfortable position.

Despite a plethora of candidates to choose from for the German president job, the idea of picking VDL is interesting because it reveals discontent with Ursula inside her own party, the CDU and Germany as a whole.

VDL signed the trade deal Trump dictated to her, whereby the EU pledged to invest in the U.S. and buy American natural gas for nothing in return, while also have to support a 15% tariff on its goods being sold in the U.S.

Other policies of VDL are the EU's infamous "Green Deal", the 2050 net-zero emissions goal, the 2035 goal to ban all cars running on gas, the uninterrupted financing of Ukraine and refusal to cave in to Russia's territorial demands, total failure to address the immigration crisis and the wave of violence it sparked across Europe, among other things.

All of these policies are incredibly unpopular with ordinary Europeans and VDL is the face of it all. Retiring her makes even more sense for the center-right who might wish to recover some goodwill following the disaster put Europe through.

Lola - Lola is the hero from the video. She's the one with the axe defending her sister from the migrant attackers

Ruby - Lola's older sister who was attacked and hospitalized

Mayah - Ruby's best friend who was with them and went to call the police after Ruby was attacked by the migrants

"Yes. So what happened was the girls where out just walking and the man in the picture made comments to lola(the younger girl) calling her sexy and other sexual remarks then the girls started to tell this man to leave them alone and stop following them and making sexual remarks to them. After that the man's sister (also in the picture) came around the corner and physically attacked ruby(the older sister) she grabbed her hair dragged her to the floor started to punch her then both the man and woman where kicking her in head while she was on the floor. At this point my daughter (mayah) called the police so my daughters account after that is all abit blurry. But that is when lola had the weapons she pulled them out to protect ruby. After that the man came back at lola recording her making sure she showed the weapons to the camera and antagonising her. Ruby was hospitalised after the attack with a severe concussion a tennis ball sized lump to the back of her head aswell as lots of bruises."
