📷 The devices that exploded are Hezbullah's ICOM radios, these are used frequently for non-encrypted communication.
There is a lot of damage and a lot of injuries. Bigger explosives. Several exploded during the funeral in Beirut, where Hezbullah officials are located.

Just know that your smart phone has a lot more potential power than an old pager. Here is a video of an iPhone being induced to explode.
Some people don’t think it’s possible for a phone to explode in this way without the external power source. I’m not so sure of that. Whether or not it is possible to remotely hack a device and overload it in such a way to make the thermal runaway happen explosively is very much up for debate.
I can say for certain that it is possible in some use cases with similar form factor battery designs. I would also say that if this is known to phone and battery manufacturers, they will go above and beyond to keep that quiet, and for good reason.
People think that when li-ion batteries overheat they simply melt, but it’s all a matter of how fast the reaction happens. For instance, in cylindrical cell EV batteries, often the mitigation tactic to surround the cells in a medium that will slow, not stop the reaction. When a cell like that goes off, there really isn’t anything you can do to stop it.
In the case of a mobile device, they control this problem with a series of failsafes and fuses. My questions is what happens if you can remotely bypass those? Can you remotely bypass them? If you can, then I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility that you could rapidly overclock a battery and get an explosion.

Israeli army radio announced on 18 September that its elite 98th Division will be redeployed from Gaza to the northern front, just one day after Tel Aviv’s deadly terror attack involving the detonation of pager devices across Lebanon.
“Peak alertness in the north – in the [army] it has been decided: the elite 98th Division will move to the northern arena. The division was planned to continue fighting in the Gaza Strip, but in the last day it was decided to divert it to the north,” army radio correspondent Doron Kadosh said via X on Wednesday.

Fire and explosion hazards present a serious concern to the widespread adoption of battery technology. This work experimentally investigates the explosion hazards associated with synthesized lithium-ion battery thermal runaway effluent gases (TREG) in an enclosed garage space typical of modern construction in North America.
Pressure rise inside the compartment is examined using high-frequency piezoelectric pressure transducers. Data on overpressure and impulse is compared with known ranges for structural damage and bodily injury thresholds and calculation methods for maximum overpressure. Data on time-resolved overpressure are compared with a vented explosion model from literature.
These comparisons support that existing models for maximum overpressure and time-resolved pressure rise remain valid for the examined synthesized TREG. Correlations are developed between gas volume and measured impulse and overpressure. An extension of this analysis with values of TREG production from literature supports that pressures measured in these experiments can be generated from ignition of gases released from batteries sized in the range of 3300 Wh to 80 500 Wh.

Germany has put a hold on new exports of weapons of war to Israel while it deals with legal challenges.
Last year, Germany approved arms exports to Israel worth 326.5 million euros ($363.5 million), including military equipment and war weapons, a 10-fold increase from 2022, according to data from the Economy Ministry, which approves export licences.
However approvals have dropped this year, with only 14.5 million euros' worth granted from January to Aug. 21, according to data provided by the Economy Ministry in response to a parliamentary question.
Of this, the "weapons of war" category accounted for only 32,449 euros.
A source close to the ministry cited a senior government official as saying it had stopped work on approving export licences for arms to Israel pending a resolution of legal cases arguing that such exports from Germany breached humanitarian law.
But the issue has created friction within the government as the Chancellery maintains its support for Israel while the Greens-led Economy and Foreign ministries, sensitive to criticism from party members, have increasingly criticised the Netanyahu administration.

At least 3 types of pagers were planted with bombs:
Motorola LX2
Teletrim
Gold Apollo Rugged Pager AR924
Mossad planted a quantity of highly explosive PETN material on the pagers’ battery and detonated it by raising the temperature of the battery enough to detonate it, Sky News Arabia confirms.
The UNSC defined an act of terrorism in Resolution 1566 of October 2004 as follows:
“criminal acts, including against civilians, committed with the intent to cause death or serious bodily injury, or taking of hostages, with the purpose to provoke a state of terror in the general public or in a group of persons or particular persons, intimidate a population or compel a government or an international organization to do or to abstain from doing any act.”
The Security Council recalls that such acts are “under no circumstances justifiable by considerations of a political, philosophical, ideological, racial, ethnic, religious or other similar nature.”
The UN General Assembly reaffirmed this definition in January 2006 (Resolution 60/43), defining terrorist acts as:
“criminal acts intended or calculated to provoke a state of terror in the general public, a group of persons or particular persons for political purposes.”
