Consumer Sentiment & the C.P.Lie

The latest Michigan survey saw 1Y-inflation expectations increase to 3.5% (versus 3.2% expected) and consumer sentiment plunge from 69.1 to 65.6 (versus 72 expected).

We don't need to tell you that this is a bad outright terrible result, but meanwhile the Fed as usual has its blinders on, desperate to explain it away because, after all, "why, at a time of falling inflation, low unemployment, and strong economic growth, do voters appear so unsatisfied with the state of the economy, and in how Biden is handling the economy? Why in particular do voters complain so much about inflation?" (That's a quote)

The first comes from the Richmond Fed, which finds that "consumers whose political party is in office tend to have higher sentiment than those affiliated with the party not in office," noting that "the partisan sentiment gap has widened over time."

The second, much more convincing result, is some research from the Chicago School of Business, which used the pre-1983 CPI that took home prices and mortgage interest payments into account.

"If it still did, inflation would have peaked at nearly 18 percent in late 2022, about double the current CPI measure."

In fact, as the study itself claims, "If we measured inflation as the BLS did in the 1970s, the recent bout of inflation would have been even higher than the worst of the 1970s! It really is as bad now as it was then."

If the CPI were to include interest paid on personal debt (such as auto loans and credit-card debt), that would also produce a much higher inflation rate than suggested by the current official measure (chart above). In fact, using this CPI, the year-over-year change in inflation has only just returned back down to its 2022 highs.

Maybe this would better explain for the economists like John Cochrane why "voters complain so much about inflation?"

🇧🇴 What was the attempted coup in Bolivia about?

After army units began leaving the main square in the capital La Paz just a few hours after the attempted coup began, everyone can't stop asking: "What actually happened?"

While former president Evo Morales called on trade unions to bring people to the streets in support of democracy and the official government, acting president Luis Arce swore in new military leadership under General José Wilson Sánchez, who immediately ordered the military to leave the main square in La Paz.

They did so, without much resistance. The first to leave was the rebel General Suñiga himself. A few hours later, he was arrested. Two other commanders were also taken into custody: former Navy Commander Juan Arnes Salvador and Air Force General Marcelo Javier Segarra. Suñiga is currently charged with terrorism and armed rebellion.

Interestingly, Suñiga calmly awaited arrest, and also had the opportunity to tell journalists that President Arce himself asked him to organize the uprising, concerned about "the decline of his own popularity."

However, the "attempt" turned out to be, to put it mildly, rather poor. General Suñiga's right-wing rhetoric, voicing opposition talking points and planning to free certain political prisoners, was not dared to be supported by either the right-conservative political circles in Bolivia itself, or even Arce and Morales' foreign critics (for example, the leadership of Argentina). The White House didn't even give any coherent reaction, only calling for calm and restraint.

Now the Bolivian leadership is stating that the situation in the armed forces is "fully under control," but the public expects new arrests and - not surprisingly - a serious "purge" of the army ranks.

Western media comment on the situation cautiously - but try to highlight General Suñiga's point of view about growing discontent in the country against the backdrop of an economic downturn due to the central bank's depleted resources. In addition, theses are published about the existence of a rift between Arce and Morales, who plans to run for president in the 2025 elections.

In this regard, the following points of view on the events currently prevail:

▪️ What happened was a staged event, the purpose of which is not a coup, but to create a split in the current Bolivian leadership. Now the opposition has a reason to endlessly pedal the issue of whether Arce ordered Suñiga to cordon off the Murillo square or not.

▪️ The military leadership, represented by Suñiga and his partners, was misled about the support for their actions from the true organizers of the mutiny, who either did not intend to bring the matter to an end, or stopped the events for other reasons.

▪️ Many see a connection between the incident and the recent visit of President Arce to Russia. There he discussed the lithium complex project being implemented in Bolivia by the company Uranium One, which is part of the Rosatom structure (the facility is planned to be put into operation in 2025). Arce also asked the Russian authorities to assist in ensuring the supply of liquid hydrocarbons, which Bolivia is in dire need of.

❗️In the latter case, such actions affect the interests of the United Original msg
Something that perhaps few channels from the so-called BRICS-sphere might not notice here, but that should be noted:

➡️ The authoritarian Movement for Socialism (MAS), which has dubiously governed Bolivia since the beginning of the 2000s, is fractured into two factions: A more progressive, social-democratic and liberal faction led by Luis Arce (this one aligned with the Group of Puebla), another more openly 21st Century Socialist and Marxist, led by Evo Morales

➡️ Morales and Arce are, because of this, political adversaries.

➡️ Meanwhile, the leaders of the infamous and demonized (mostly by Venezuelan and Bolivian state propaganda media, as well as by branches of regional Russian and Chinese media) Bolivian right have been imprisoned since 2022 following the decision of Center-Right President Jeanine Anez to hold elections in the country with the MAS included (despite the fact that Anez is supposedly a "dictator")

🇧🇴 Among these prisoners are the Democratically elected Governor of Santa Cruz, the richest and most prosperous region of Bolivia, Luis Fernando Camacho and Anez herself who, after the elections ended with the victory of the then-unified MAS, ended up being arrested for, ironically, being "anti-democracy"

They were going to agree on which of the two politicians would be nominated in the next elections. And it was small, but there was a chance to overcome the differences between them. And here it is. Coincidence?!"

📎 ¿Por qué no te Callas?
📝 🇧🇴 Depending on your political ideology, most Bolivian election cycles since 2008 included what some have described as "coups". Especially when it revolves around opposing Evo Morales.

🔶️ While the world was shocked and then later mocked the coup attempt, Bolivian sentiments grew apathetic towards what gradually became an election stunt. Likely issued by the sitting President after experiencing waning popularity, in order to help him defeat Evo Morales in future elections.

🔶️ This opportunity has allowed for Luis Arce to reshuffle his Military Chiefs, while consolidating power with the full blessings of the international community. And if any foreign entity wanted to prevent Evo Morales from returning to power, well you can probably guess who.

🔶️ Everyone blames Washington for yesterday's coup, but I think this is only half the story. Simply put, Luis Arce is easier for the west to negotiate with than Evo Morales.

🔶️ Also, Bolivia's MAS is extremely polarized between Arce & Morales. The President needed a real victory to "reign in" supporters before competing with Morales on Friday.

🔶️ Lastly: Morales = bad business for US
Arce = good for business with US

🇧🇴❗️ Crisis in Bolivia: Business leaders urge Luis Arce to implement regulatory changes to reverse the “critical situation” of natural gas

➡️ The Bolivian Chamber of Hydrocarbons and Energy (CBHE) has warned about the "critical situation" in the sector due to the decline in natural gas production and royalties. They have also asked the government of Luis Arce for regulatory changes to encourage investments in exploration and exploitation.

📝 The CBHE expressed its "concern" over the progressive decline in gas production and stated that there is a "critical situation," despite efforts by companies and the state-owned Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) to develop projects to mitigate this decline.

🔽 Bolivia's natural gas production decreased from about 22,187 million cubic meters (mm3) in 2014 to 13,390 mm3 in 2023, while export royalties fell from more than $6 billion in 2014 to $2.043 billion last year, according to official data.

The Arce government has been implementing the ‘Upstream Reactivation Plan (exploration and production)’ for several years. This plan includes 42 exploratory projects in various regions to increase hydrocarbon production, which could yield positive results in the future.

💸 Some experts have warned that the shortage of fuels and the rising cost of some foods are due to the lack of dollars, which is caused by the drop in income from natural gas exports.

Recently, Bolivian President Luis Arce faced criticism for saying that natural gas, which had been the country's economic mainstay for several years, "has been exhausted" and blamed previous administrations for not conducting new explorations.

🇧🇴⚡️ — Luis Fernando Camacho, political prisoner and former governor of Santa Cruz de La Sierra, on 𝕏:

Yesterday, Bolivians lived through hours of great uncertainty. A government and a situation like the one we saw yesterday are not the way to overcome the economic crisis.

The MAS model is exhausted in every sense. It is incapable of generating stability, leadership, and solutions for people's problems. It is a model that only generates chaos, abuses, and bad news for Bolivians. As the elected Governor of Santa Cruz, I demand two clear things from President Luis Arce.

➡️ First, an explanation of what happened yesterday. Was it a media spectacle staged by the government itself, as General Zúñiga says? Was it just the madness of some military personnel? Was it simply another display of lack of control? What happened yesterday? Explain and face the people, President.

➡️ The second thing I demand is a parliamentary commission that works with the support of international observers to investigate what really happened yesterday.

Bolivia needs seriousness to overcome the crisis. Bolivia needs a serious and solid democracy to solve its economic problems. And for that, Bolivia needs a strong change. A change to move towards stability, prosperity, and democracy.

The industrial Midwest was once one of the richest areas in the entire world.

No region had a more robust, productive, and secure middle class.

Midwestern Whites produced the vehicles, machines, and technology that drove the industrialization of not only America but much of the West and the world.

But, due to unchecked movements of people from within the US and abroad Midwestern Whites have been pushed out of their own cities.

Chicago is now one of the most violent cities in the world.

While Detroit has become the most impoverished city in America.

If Whites do not push for policy change these cities will continue to deteriorate and the rot will spread.
