🛡 🇷🇴 🇩🇪 Canopied Russian tanks in Ukraine resemble WWII Tank destroyers/mobile field guns 🔶️ "The Romanians had no experience with designing an armored vehicle from scratch,... Due to this lack of experience, they had decided to forgo theoretical preliminary…
🛡 🇷🇺 🇺🇦 Tank on tank engagements are EXTREMELY rare in Ukraine (& likely just modern war in general).
🔶️ Tanks function far more effectively as mobile pillboxes, short range direct fire artillery to snipe outposts/LP-OPs/MG nests, fists to break holes for infantry assaults, or hell fists to break holes *in* infantry assaults.
🔶️ Ukraine (and Russia) have made very good use of tanks as the center of gravity around which an assault forms. You can even watch as Russian assaults begin getting hit, that as BMPs or BTRs get killed, so long as the tank is still there the assault continues.
🔶️ When the tank is knocked out the infantry begins to crumble. The actual tank used is relatively unimportant. It's the tank's existence that matters.
🔶️ Sure better armor will stop some hits or stop them from being fatal. Better optics will give better situational awareness & targeting data. Better ammo stowage will decrease the risk of Jack in the Boxing the turret.
🔶️ There will always be a bigger warhead, a stealthier enemy, or a wise gunner aiming for a weak spot. No matter how strong your tank's armor, a $50 AT mine made in 1971 stored in the most abysmal conditions will track every tank in exiatence
🔶️ But ultimately a tanks primary defense is, & I know this seems overly simplistic but: not getting hit.

🛡 📖 📝 Carolina Lion: "How about we just take this, add some reactive and slat armor, upgrade the engine and transmission, incorporate an electronics warfare suite and some remote controlled 20mm/30mm anti-aircraft guns."

🛡 🇷🇺 🇺🇦 Russia's most numerous tank type throughout the war has been the T-72, but there are many different types, if we plot all 1270 visually confirmed losses on one graph we get this, which is a bit hard to analyze, so I have made 2 other graphs
🔶️ First I added a rolling 3-month average to smooth out the spikes, then I divided the losses by the base modal, T-72B3, T-72B or older tanks, there is not a lot of change, but the newest base modal, (T-72B3 in yellow) has had some decline over the last 3 months
🔶️ If we split the T-72 modules Obr 2022 with the most recent upgrades separately we get this. There is both a T-72B and T-72B3 obr 2022, combined in blue in the graph. Their proportion of the losses increased rapidly last year, but from November, remained at about 40% of the total. I don't know why or if it's significant.
🔶️ In contrast to the T-72s, for the T-80 losses, the big change happened in 2022, when the Russians went from mainly T-80U to T-80BVs. there are now also T-80 Obr 2022 variants, but so far are a smaller proportion.

🛡 🇫🇷 🇩🇪 More details on MGCS. Basically it’s moving forward because Paris and Berlin have now agreed the work-share. It’s likely that the system will evolve considerably, but it’ll definitely be smaller, lighter and with un-crewed turrets.

🛡 🇺🇸 🇷🇺 Inherent issue with modern warfare with the prevalence of drones, loitering munitions, and long range anti-tank weapons.
🔶️ The difference here and in how the US would use them is that the US has a massive military apparatus to set the conditions where armor can be used more safely.
🔶️ More EW and C-UAS is an acknowledgement that western armor provided is just as vulnerable as the Soviet inheritance that Ukraine has & for it to have an extended lifetime where they actually get the value of it's greater capability solutions need to be found or else.
🔶️ Men can be rotated and replaced, equipment remains in service continuously until it is destroyed or rendered inoperable.
