🇨🇳 🇹🇼 China Is Capable of Blockading Taiwan, U.S. Navy Commander Says

‘If they want to bully and put ships around Taiwan, they very much can do that,’ said Vice Adm. Karl Thomas

China’s armed forces are capable of blockading Taiwan, a senior U.S. Navy official said, pointing to the size of the country’s navy, which is the world’s largest and growing at a rapid pace.

“They have a very large navy, and if they want to bully and put ships around Taiwan, they very much can do that,” Vice Adm. Karl Thomas, commander of the U.S. Seventh Fleet, said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

🇨🇳 🇹🇼 The grave consequences of a Chinese takeover of Taiwan, from Office of Naval Intelligence:

“If China was to win control of Taiwan, it would be disastrous for the U.S. even if China did not use military force, the ONI said.”

Such an achievement would give Xi “extraordinary new legitimacy” both domestically and internationally. It would…allow China to absorb a major economy.”

“China would gain greater military power, greater reach into the Pacific domination of China’s near-abroad sea lanes and chokepoints, and give the People’s Liberation Army “confidence in pursuing other territorial claims.”

“It would also give Beijing control over critical Taiwanese technology, particularly semiconductor manufacturing, and instantly put China in a position to exploit U.S. weapon systems in Taiwan, such as fighter aircraft, air defenses and other systems.”

“More nations would likely defer to China after it absorbed Taiwan, and its influence would grow markedly.
Conversely, American influence and credibility would sharply decline.”

“The ONI brief suggested that China’s efforts to establish the conditions necessary for a successful takeover of Taiwan seem timed to coincide with Xi’s fourth term as president, in about 2027.”

“The ONI also noted that China controls 40 percent of the world commercial shipbuilding market, with 50 domestic drydocks that can accommodate an aircraft carrier.”

🇺🇲🇨🇳 CIA chief Burns on the struggle for the future world order:

Russia's military operation in Ukraine is a challenge to the established world order , but the only country that wants to change it and has the necessary political, diplomatic, economic and military power is China.

Xi Jinping now has more power than Mao Zedong. And instead of using that power to strengthen, revitalize and renew the international system that has helped transform China, Xi is looking to remake it .”
🇫🇷🇯🇵🇨🇳 Macron blocks NATO outpost in Japan amid Chinese complaints

France is holding up a deal to expand NATO’s reach into Asia, opening a split in the Western security alliance on the eve of a vital summit next week.

For months, NATO officials have been discussing plans to open a liaison office in Japan, which would represent the allies’ first outpost in the region at a time of growing tension between the West and China.

But French President Emmanuel Macron has put his foot down, insisting such geographical expansion would risk shifting the alliance’s remit too far from its original North Atlantic focus.

The French official insisted that NATO is geographically confined to the North Atlantic. “NATO means North Atlantic Treaty Organization,” the official said, adding that Articles 5 and 6, clauses at the heart of the alliance, are “geographic.”

🇲🇽 Support rising for Mexican opposition presidency hopeful Galvez

Public support for Mexican opposition senator Xochitl Galvez has risen since she declared her intention last week to seek the presidency in 2024, an opinion poll showed.

Galvez will compete with the leftist ruling National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) in the June 2024 election to succeed President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

A June 30 to July 2 poll of 500 adult Mexicans by newspaper El Financiero showed that 34% of respondents viewed Galvez favorably, up 10% from a month earlier. That compared with 31% who held the opposite view. The remainder were neutral or did not know her.

The telephone survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points, El Financiero said.

🇭🇺🇦🇹🇷🇸 Hungary, Serbia and Austria held an "anti-migration summit" in Vienna a few days ago where they firmly rejected the EU's plans for mandatory migrant quotas.

Viktor Orbán: "Hungary will not implement the EU’s decisions on migration, the mandatory quota will not be accepted, and neither will the obligation to build “migrant ghettos” and migrant camps be accepted. an effective Hungarian model should replace the European model that is clearly not working. Hungary will find a legal and political way to ensure that Brussels’ decisions that are deemed harmful are not implemented."

He called the situation sad and stated that Hungary must defend itself not only against illegal migrants and people smugglers, but also against Brussels, and it will do so. In Viktor Orbán’s opinion Hungarians were not only defending Hungary, but also the whole of Europe, including Austria, against illegal immigrants.

Praising the work of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, the Hungarian Prime Minister said: without Serbia and Hungary, there would be hundreds of thousands more illegal migrants in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands than there are now. The Hungarian Prime Minister also thanked Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer for standing up for Hungary at the recent EU summit in Brussels.

The EU’s asylum system is not working and Austria, together with Hungary and Serbia, has clearly put the brakes on asylum, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said. The Chancellor said, stressing that “international cooperation is the only way to combat international organized crime effectively”. “Our countries are very seriously affected by illegal migration,” he said.

The Chancellor expressed his gratitude to Serbia for lifting the visa waiver for India and Tunisia, which has directly led to a significant reduction in the number of asylum seekers in Austria. The Chancellor also underlined the close police cooperation between the three countries, the effectiveness of which is clearly demonstrated by the fact that the Austrian, Serbian and Hungarian police forces managed to apprehend a total of 700 people smugglers last year.

🇮🇹 Italy’s Giorgia Meloni opens door to more workers from outside the EU

Italy’s rightwing coalition plans to sharply increase the number of foreign workers from outside the EU while continuing to crack down on irregular migrants crossing the Mediterranean.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government this week said it would issue 425,000 work permits to non-EU nationals between this year and 2025, which Rome said was part of its plan to promote legal immigration to fill gaps in the labour market.

Under its new increased quota system, Rome plans to gradually increase the number of new worker permits granted yearly, reaching 165,000 in 2025, while also expanding the categories of jobs for which foreign workers from outside the EU will be eligible.

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, Italy granted fewer than 31,000 work permits a year to migrant workers from outside the EU.

This year, Rome plans to grant an additional 40,000 permits to the 82,705 already in the works.

🇩🇪 Why Germany could soon recruit Kita educators who speak 'no or little German'

In the face of extreme staff shortages at daycare centres (Kitas) around Germany, the FDP parliamentary group is calling to reduce the current language requirement to become a Kita educator.

Shortened opening hours, unscheduled closing days, too large group sizes: These issues are often exacerbated by the shortage of Erzieher (educators) in Kitas (day-care centres) in Germany.

According to recent estimates by the Bertelsmann Foundation, there is a shortage of around 384,000 daycare places nationwide.

The Free Democratic (FDP) parliamentary group is now advocating the use of teachers who speak little or no German in day-care centres to counter the growing staff shortage.

These qualifications should be recognised un-bureaucratically and "if possible within 60 days". Currently, an advanced, C1, level of German is required to be a teacher at most Kitas.

The FDP also proposed recruiting Kita teachers from abroad - in a similar fashion to how IT professionals are currently being targeted.
