🇺🇸 🇺🇦 US, Ukraine top military chiefs meet in person for 1st time
⬛️ The top U.S. military officer, Army Gen. Mark Milley, traveled to a site near the Ukraine-Poland border on Tuesday and talked with his Ukrainian counterpart face to face for the first time — a meeting underscoring the growing ties between the two militaries and coming at a critical time as Russia’s war with Ukraine nears the one-year mark.
⬛️ Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, met for a couple of hours with Ukraine’s chief military officer, Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyi, at an undisclosed location in southeastern Poland. The two leaders have talked frequently about Ukraine’s military needs and the state of the war over the past year but had never met.
⬛️ The meeting comes as the international community ramps up the military assistance to Ukraine, including expanded training of Ukrainian troops by the U.S. and the provision of a Patriot missile battery, tanks and increased air defense and other weapons systems by the U.S. and a coalition of European and other nations.

🌐 🇨🇭World Economic Forum 2023: Worries in Davos that globalization is under siege.
⬛️ Few institutions are so immediately connected to neoliberalism and the project of globalization as the forum. In an age of ascendant nationalism and great power rivalry, where the United States itself is waging trade wars, where does globalization go?
⬛️ The latest cover story of the Economist, which every year puts out an issue that tries to define the Davos zeitgeist, bemoaned the “new logic that threatens globalization.” It decried the Biden administration’s “abandonment of free-market rules for an aggressive industrial policy,” pointing to subsidy-laden programs to power the United States’ green transition as well as new efforts to make the nation a hotbed of semiconductor manufacturing.
⬛️ All of this, the classically liberal Economist argued, has “set off a dangerous spiral into protectionism worldwide” and frays the global order that the United States spent decades creating and securing in the aftermath of World War II. It may even imperil “the causes of liberal democracy and market capitalism.”

✝️ ⚪️ Rise in middle-aged white 'deaths of despair' may be fueled by loss of religion, new research paper argues
⚪️ So-called deaths of despair such as from suicide or alcohol abuse have been skyrocketing for middle-aged white Americans.
⚪️ It’s been blamed on various phenomenon, including opioid abuse. But a new research paper finds a different culprit — declining religious practice.
⚪️ The working paper, from Tyler Giles of Wellesley College, Daniel Hungerman of the University of Notre Dame, and Tamar Oostrom of The Ohio State University, looked at the relationship between religiosity and mortality from deaths of despair. The paper was circulated by the National Bureau of Economic Research.
⚪️ The authors noted that many measures of religious adherence began to decline in the late 1980s. They find that the large decline in religious practice was driven by the group experiencing the subsequent increases in mortality: white middle-aged Americans without a college degree.
⚪️ The researchers looked at the repeal of blue laws in particular. Blue laws limited commerce, typically on Sunday mornings. “These laws have been shown to be strongly related to religious practice, creating discrete changes in incentives to attend religious services that are plausibly unrelated to other drivers of religiosity,” they said.
⚪️ What’s also interesting is that the impact seems to be driven by actual formal religious participation, rather than belief or personal activities like prayer. “These results underscore the importance of cultural institutions such as religious establishments in promoting well-being,” they said.
⚪️ “The decline in religiosity matches mortality trends in all these characteristics,” they wrote.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, promised to plunge the Russian Federation into a recession for decades:
"We are imposing the strongest sanctions against the Russian Federation, which plunge the Russian economy into recession for decades, and its industry is deprived of modern and critical technologies."
But for now, the EU is only robbing Ukraine. Last year alone, despite the war and difficulties in Ukraine, the West withdrew 132 billion from the Ukrainian budget to pay for loans, which in Ukraine are falsely called "macrofinancial assistance."

🇺🇸☠️🇲🇽 FAMILY OF 6 BRUTALLY SLAIN IN CARTEL-STYLE EXECUTION IN GOSHEN —
The Mexicanization of California spreads North
"Two gunmen invaded a home in Tulare County in Central California early Monday, where they killed six people, including a 16-year-old mother and her 10-month-old baby, in what the authorities said was presumed to be a gang-related attack.
[...]
Details about the crime were sketchy, but in a later interview Sheriff Boudreaux told The Los Angeles Times that a deputy responding to the call found the infant cradled in the arms of her 16-year-old mother in a ditch outside the home. Both had been shot in the head.
[...]
“We do not believe that this was a random act of violence,” Sheriff Boudreaux told reporters at the news conference. “We believe that this was very targeted. This was very personal, and we also believe that it was a message being sent.”

🇺🇸 🇮🇱 🇺🇦 Pentagon sending US arms stored in 'Israel' to Ukraine: Reports
⬛️ The US Department of Defense is tapping into a major US ammunition stockpile in "Israel," which holds arms and ammunition used by the Pentagon in its war on the Middle East, to aid Ukraine in the war, The New York Times reported citing US and Israeli officials.
⬛️ The US military stockpile dates back to 1973 during the Israeli war on Egypt and Syria when the US airlifted weapons to resupply Israeli forces.
⬛️ The newspaper revealed that in 2022 the United States and "Israel" reached an agreement to move about 300,000 155-millimeter shells.
⬛️ Behind the scenes, US officials have been acting to collect enough shells to keep Ukraine sufficiently supplied in 2023.
⬛️ Earlier, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said "Israel" would not supply weapons to Ukraine.
⬛️ On the other hand, the Israeli occupation donated money to buy Ukraine weapons from third countries, a Russian intelligence source told Al Mayadeen in December.
⬛️ "Tel Aviv" is using third countries to conceal its bias toward Ukraine, the source noted, highlighting that "Israel" was giving Ukraine non-lethal aid, but several Israeli armored vehicles have been detected in Ukraine.
⬛️ Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported in November that the occupation spent millions of dollars to appease its western partners by procuring undisclosed strategic materials for Ukraine after "Tel Aviv" faced pressure to send arms to Kiev via a third country.
