Once upon a time there was a Chinese farmer whose horse ran away . That same evening, neighbors came in to express their sympathy. They said, “We are so upset that your horse ran away. This is such a misfortune .”
The farmer said: "Perhaps"
The next day the horse returned to him, bringing with him seven new wild horses , and that same evening the neighbors came to him again and said, “Oh, what luck . You are lucky. Now you have eight horses!”
To which the farmer said: “Perhaps”
The next day, his son tried to break one of the wild horses, but fell and broke his leg. The neighbors said again: “Oh, what a misfortune , you’re so unlucky,”
And the farmer replied: “Perhaps”
The next day, military commanders came to take the young men into the army , but did not take their son because of a broken leg . The neighbors came again and said: “What luck !”
And the farmer said, "Perhaps"
