Pepe the Frog was created by American cartoonist Matt Furie in 2005. He first appeared in Furie's webcomic Boy's Club as a chill frog hanging with his roommates, whose only philosophy was "feels good man."

By 2008, Pepe had jumped to 4chan, where users remixed him into thousands of variations: Sad Pepe, Smug Pepe, Angry Pepe. Every emotion got a Pepe.
By 2015, he was the most retweeted meme on Twitter and Tumblr's biggest meme of the year.

🎁That same year, the "Rare Pepes" trend took off, with people ironically trading Pepe JPEGs on eBay. The joke: what if memes had value?

🎁In 2016, the joke became real. An anonymous user created tokenized Pepe trading cards on Counterparty, a Bitcoin application layer, making them one of the first crypto collectibles ever created, before the word "NFT" even existed. Over 1,700 cards were created by 300+ artists worldwide.

🎁2016 also brought a darker chapter. Pepe was co-opted by political groups during the US election, leading the Anti-Defamation League to add him to their hate symbol database. Matt Furie fought back legally, and in 2017 even published a comic strip "killing off" Pepe in protest. But you can't kill a meme.
