Basil’s health crisis worsened when he suffered retinal bleeding that impaired his vision, followed by the amputation of his leg due to an infection caused by a rat bite in his tent.

The infection developed into gangrene amid a lack of sterilisation, poor hygiene, and a shortage of painkillers.

He also recounts being subjected to abuse, interrogation, and beatings during the siege of Al-Shifa Hospital, where he was denied dialysis for weeks.

With his sister having died while awaiting a medical transfer, Basil faces an uncertain fate. His brother describes their lives as a “slow death” amid harsh conditions that have led Basil to wish for death as an escape from his daily ordeal.

Antisemitism in British schools has reached the highest level ever recorded for the first half of a year, as a government-commissioned review warns Jewish children are facing a situation unlike that experienced by other communities in Britain.

Jewish pupils face “regular harassment and abuse,” with some Jewish school heads spending more time on security than education.

School antisemitism surged 59%, from 112 incidents in early 2025 to a record 178 in early 2026.

One Jewish teenager described being told he “should be in a gas chamber,” while swastikas were drawn in classrooms and Nazi salutes became widespread at his school.
