Following the latest news closely can get addicting, and I think there's an evolutionary reason for that. Awareness of the world around you can save your life. But I wonder if we have reached an information saturation point, where the more you follow the news, the worse it is for the propagation of your genes? I expect realistic virtual reality goggles will be a similar evolutionary bottleneck. Technology creates opportunities for new addictions, which make you less attractive/fit.
