🇺🇸🇨🇳🇵🇾China issues rebuke to U.S., Taiwan over vice president's New York 'stopover

Beijing has rebuked Taiwanese Vice President William Lai as a "troublemaker" over his visit to the United States on his way to Paraguay and accused his administration of using the trip to "solicit" U.S. support for independence.

🗣"China deplores and strongly condemns the U.S. decision to arrange the so-called stopover for Lai Ching-te. Lai clings stubbornly to the separatist position for 'Taiwan independence'. He is a troublemaker through and through," China's foreign ministry spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that China "firmly opposes any form of official interaction" between the United States and Taiwan.

🇵🇾🇹🇼 New Paraguay president stresses South American country’s ties with Taiwan

President Santiago Peña said Paraguay and Taiwan are “not just allies, but also brothers” when he was sworn in as the South American country’s new president.

Peña took the presidential oath outside the government palace in the capital of Asunción in a ceremony attended by several regional leaders and Taiwan’s Vice President William Lai.

“We will build alliances and cooperation with a geostrategic vision, seeking horizontal agreements,” Peña said, noting that the country’s relationship with Taiwan “is an example of this.”

Taiwan had become a thorny issue during Paraguay’s presidential campaign as Peña’s main challenger argued the alliance had become too costly because it prevented the small country from pursuing business opportunities with China.

🇵🇾Paraguay finds 4 tons of cocaine stashed in sugar in its biggest drug bust yet

Authorities in Paraguay announced Tuesday the largest cocaine seizure in the country’s history, after officials were surprised to find more than 4 tons of the drug stashed inside a shipment of sugar bound for Belgium.

President Santiago Peña told journalists that the record discovery, code-named “Operation Sweetness,” added to a string of “very sad episodes” in Paraguay that had transformed the strategically located nation into a key drug trafficking hub in the region.

Peña expressed hope that the seizure, valued at roughly $240 million, would disrupt the cocaine trade and said police were pursuing those responsible.

🇵🇾 Police shootout during a drug raid kills Paraguayan lawmaker

A pre-dawn police raid targeting the home of a Paraguayan lawmaker in a notorious drug smuggling haven near the country’s border with Brazil turned into a chaotic shootout on Monday, authorities said, leaving the lawmaker dead.

Security forces equipped with firearms and search warrants arrived simultaneously at the separate homes of Eulalio “Lalo” Gomes, a 67-year-old rancher and lawmaker from Paraguay’s long-ruling Colorado party, and his son early Monday in the lush borderland to look for evidence in what authorities described as a wide-scale investigation into drug smuggling and money laundering in local real estate.
