🇷🇺❌🇺🇦 —🗺 Institute for the Study of War: Russian forces may intensify efforts to capture Kupyansk, Kharkiv Oblast, in the coming weeks and have a grouping of forces in the area that appears to be less degraded than Russian groupings responsible for offensive efforts elsewhere in eastern Ukraine.

➡️ Russian forces appear to have conditions conducive to intensifying operations in the Kupyansk direction with the intent of making territorial gains in areas that are more operationally significant than other areas that Russian forces are currently attempting to seize.

➡️ Ukrainian officials have stated that Russian forces aim to capture Kupyansk and Borova (35km west of Svatove) during winter 2024.

➡️ Ukrainian officials have not publicly reported any sudden buildup of Russian forces in the Kupyansk direction indicating that a large-scale offensive to advance to the Oskil River is imminent.

➡️ Russian forces appear to have gradually reconstituted units badly degraded during the Ukrainian counteroffensive in September 2022 and Russia’s failed winter-spring 2023 offensive.

➡️ The Russian command likely intends these relatively well-rested and reconstituted units to intensify localized offensive operations that Russian forces started in the area in October 2023.

➡️ Ukraine is bracing for a renewed Russian offensive near Kharkiv as Moscow ramps up its bombardment of the north-eastern city and the surrounding region.

➡️ Moscow’s forces struck the city and 15 surrounding settlements with missiles, artillery and mortars on Thursday, according to local officials.

➡️ Targets included both civilian buildings and military positions in what is seen as preparation for a large-scale offensive in the coming weeks, a source close to Ukraine’s armed forces said.

➡️ Kyiv has not released details of the attacks, but late on Wednesday the source said: “Pre-attack bombardments have been carried out all day at military sites around the region.”

🇲🇲❌🇲🇲 — 📰 Reuters: Artillery shells from restive Myanmar region hit southwest China town

➡️ Five people in a Chinese town near Myanmar were wounded on Wednesday by stray artillery shells from across the border, according to China's state-controlled Global Times, as fighting between Myanmar's junta and rebels persisted despite talks.

➡️ Global Times circulated a video on social media showing one person lying on a pedestrian pavement in front of a row of street stores with people shouting, "Call the police!"

➡️ In the video, Global Times said officials in Zhenkang, a city in Yunnan province, had confirmed shelling that had strayed from Laukkai, an area in Myanmar's Kokang region, hitting Nansan, a town under its jurisdiction, around 2:00 p.m. (0600 GMT) on Wednesday.

➡️ For years, Kokang in Myanmar's Shan state has been a volatile and restive region.

➡️ In 2015, shelling from the area also landed across the border in Yunnan amid fighting between Myanmar government troops and rebels, injuring one Chinese and four Myanmar nationals and angering Beijing.
