🇨🇳🇲🇽 China denies fentanyl trafficking to Mexico

Mexico's president said on Tuesday he had written to Chinese President Xi Jinping, urging him to help control shipments of fentanyl as he fended off criticism in the U.S. that Mexico is not doing enough to stop the trafficking of the synthetic opioid.

🗣"We come to you, President Xi Jinping, not to ask for your support in the face of these rude threats, but to request that for humanitarian reasons, you help us control shipments of fentanyl that can be sent from China to our country," Obrador said.

Lopez Obrador claims Mexico does not produce fentanyl and that cartels buy it directly from Asia. He said in the letter that only 30% of the drug consumed in the U.S. enters via Mexico.

🗣"There is no such thing as illegal trafficking of fentanyl between China and Mexico. China has not been notified by Mexico about any seizure of fentanyl from China," China's foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, responding to a letter from the Mexican president.

🇲🇽🇺🇸Mexico president asks Biden to stop USAID funding opposition groups

Mexico's president asked his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden to stop the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) from funding groups hostile to his government, according to a letter presented to journalists on Wednesday.

🗣"The U.S. government, specifically though USAID, has for some time been financing organizations openly against the legal and legitimate government I represent," he said in the letter.

"This is clearly an interventionist act, contrary to international law and the relations which should prevail between free and sovereign states."

The letter calls for Biden's intervention, saying the U.S. State Department in recent days announced that USAID would increase its funding toward such organizations.

🇲🇽🇺🇸 Mexico president urges US Latinos not to give DeSantis 'even one vote'

Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has urged US Latino voters not to support Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who launched his bid to oust President Joe Biden with a promise to "shut down" the border.

🗣"I hope Florida's Hispanics wake up and don't give him [DeSantis] even one vote," Lopez Obrador said at his daily news conference on Thursday.

"I also take this opportunity to tell Mr DeSantis, who yesterday, as you can see, I wasn't wrong that all his politicking over migrants was because he wanted to be the Republican Party's candidate," he added.

DeSantis announced his candidacy on Wednesday at a live Twitter event.

🇲🇽 Navy chief: Mexico to become “world shipping power”

Navy Minister José Rafael Ojeda Durán suggests Mexico will become a “world shipping power” thanks to the construction of a trade corridor between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

On Mexico’s National Navy Day, Ojeda noted that the government is building a “new route for global trade” between Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, on the Pacific side and Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, on the Gulf coast.

The Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor will have a modernized railroad and upgraded highways between the port cities of Salina Cruz and Coatzacoalcos as well as 10 new industrial parks.

The government is touting the corridor as an alternative to the Panama Canal given that it will connect the Pacific and Atlantic oceans across a relatively narrow strip of land.

🇲🇽 Mexican president’s party wins State of Mexico governor elections

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s party won the gubernatorial elections held in the State of Mexico, the country’s most populous, on Sunday.

The National Regeneration Movement (Morena) toppled the once-powerful Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which lost control of the state – home to 17 million inhabitants -, for the first time in 94 years.

With 66% of returns in from polling stations, Delfina Gomez, candidate for Morena, had 53% of the vote. Her rival, Alejandra del Moral, a PRI politician heading a coalition of opposition parties, had 44%.

Gomez, who narrowly lost the previous state election, will be the State of Mexico's first female governor.

In a separate gubernatorial vote in the northern border state of Coahuila, the PRI won the election.

President Biden is sending a top White House official to Mexico for talks on fighting the fentanyl crisis and getting a handle on migration in the region.

One of the main topics will be ways to combat the flow of fentanyl in North America.

According to the White House, the panel will discuss ways to dismantle and prosecute criminal drug networks while examining the flow of firearms into Mexico that fuels cartels’ violence. The countries will also discuss ways to disrupt the flow of fentanyl-creating chemicals from overseas.

🇲🇽 Mexico’s ruling party candidates wrap up campaigns before poll

The presidential candidates for Mexico’s ruling party made their last bids to voters before a nationwide survey begins to determine whom the party will select to represent it in the 2024 election.

The Morena party of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who is not eligible to run again next year, has decided that candidates will have to end their campaign tours this weekend.

Former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, who has led in most polls so far, headed to Veracruz state on the east coast, while ex-Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, another top candidate, ended his tour on Sunday with a speech at an auditorium in Mexico City.

Morena will announce its pick on Sept. 6. Whoever ends up with greater support in the nationwide survey will be designated the party’s national coordinator, since it’s too early to announce formal candidates under election rules.
