๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Ugandaโ€™s President says West "wasting time" with gay rights push

Ugandaโ€™s President Yoweri Museveni has accused Western countries of imposing gay rights on African nations, as lawmakers in the country prepare to vote on an anti-LGBT bill.

The bill, introduced earlier this month, proposes tougher penalties for same-sex relations in a country where homosexuality is already illegal.

In an address to parliament on Thursday, President Museveni said Western threats of sanctions on African countries opposed to homosexuality were hypocritical because the West also has some "weird cultures".

"Western countries should stop wasting the time of humanity by trying to impose their practices on other people," Museveni said.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ US urges Uganda to reconsider new anti-LGBT law

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said anti-LGBT draft legislation passed by Uganda's parliament on Tuesday undermines fundamental human rights and urged the government to reconsider implementing it.

The passed bill says anyone identifying as LGBT could face a long prison sentence. Individuals belonging to organisations supporting LGBT could also go to jail. The legislation goes much further than Uganda's existing laws which ban homosexual activity.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Uganda parliament passes anti-homosexual bill mostly unchanged

Uganda's parliament on Tuesday passed anti-homosexual bill mostly unchanged, including long jail terms and the death penalty, after President Yoweri Museveni requested some parts of the original legislation be toned down.

Despite some changes, the new bill retains most of the harshest measures of the legislation adopted in March, which drew condemnation from the United States, European Union, United Nations and major corporations.

The provisions retained in the new bill include the death penalty for aggravated homosexuality and a 20-year sentence for "promoting" homosexuality.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ UK, US issue fresh security alert on Uganda

The British High Commission in Uganda has warned of โ€œa growing terror threat in Uganda, including targeting of foreignersโ€, hours after the US embassy issued a similar alert.

Both diplomatic missions on Tuesday warned their citizens against attending large gatherings, including worship activities.

They also cautioned against participation in music and cultural festivals, ahead of the popular Nyege Nyege festival on Thursday.

The UK government has also advised its citizens against visits to the Semuliki National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park, where a British and South African couple and their Ugandan guide were killed by the ADF terrorists.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Uganda's President Museveni criticises US, UK for security advisories

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni denounced the United States and UK for issuing adverse security advisories to their citizens in Uganda, and accused both countries of creating and conserving insecurity in Africa.

The U.S. and UK both issued travel warnings urging their citizens not to travel to Jinja town in eastern Uganda to attend a cultural festival that was held over the weekend, with the UK citing the killing of tourists and the risk of threats against foreigners.

Museveni said the British and the Americans were panicking and making a mistake in issuing unwarranted advisories.

"These advisories by some of these actors is another form of interference in our internal affairs by these elements. Moreover, part of the terrorism in Africa is either created or conserved by some of the actors that try to be global policemen," Museveni said.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฒ Uganda trying to rescue 22 trafficked nationals held in Myanmar

At least 22 Ugandans are being held captive in Myanmar after being trafficked there for forced work, according to the Ugandan internal affairs ministry.

The Ugandan government says it is trying to rescue the 17 men and five women who were recruited by โ€œlocal leadersโ€ in the suburbs of the capital, Kampala.

The victims, who are believed to be aged between 22 and 30, reportedly thought they were being recruited to be employed in supermarkets in Thailand and to do other casual or domestic work.

Interpol said reports have been received from Ugandan law enforcement of several citizens being taken to Dubai for employment before being diverted to Thailand and then to Myanmar.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Escalation in east DR Congo puts Uganda on alert

Security agencies in Uganda are on high alert following renewed fighting in the restive eastern DR Congo, which has seen disruption of business between the two countries, an influx of refugees, and fears that the war could spill over across the border.

Since January, fighting between the Congolese national army and the M23 rebel group in the North Kivu Province has seen thousands of civilians displaced, with many trekking into Uganda.

Ugandaโ€™s Defence Public Information Officer spokesperson said the army has increased surveillance and deployment around the common border to avert any violence spillover.

Between September 2023 and January 2024, Uganda received more than 35,900 Congolese asylum seekers, according to the UNHCR.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Ugandan president's son vows crackdown on graft after taking over military

The son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has pledged to fight corruption in the military after taking over as its top commander, a move widely expected to accelerate his rise to eventually succeed his father.

Museveni named 49-year-old son Muhoozi Kainerugaba as the East African country's new Chief of Defence Forces last week.

In a formal handover ceremony on Thursday, Kainerugaba "vowed to improve the welfare of soldiers by fighting the evil of corruption and mismanagement of resources", according to a statement released by the military.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Top Ugandan court upholds anti-LGBT law

Uganda's Constitutional Court has upheld the country's anti-homosexuality law, which imposes life imprisonment and the death penalty on those involved in certain same-sex acts.

But the court did weaken the legislation, saying that parts of it violated constitutional rights.

Sections that criminalise behaviour such as allowing gay sex to happen at oneโ€™s property, failing to report acts of homosexuality and giving someone a terminal illness through gay sex are to be struck.

"We decline to nullify the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 in its entirety, neither will we grant a permanent injunction against its enforcement," lead judge Richard Buteera said.

The petitioners say they will appeal against the ruling.
