🇰🇷🇰🇵 What do we know so far about the recent drone intrusion?
🔺Five drones intruded the air space of South Korea. The UAVs flew over the Military Demarcation Line separating the two Koreas and were spotted in the areas of Gimpo, Ganghwa Island and Paju. They then proceeded to Seoul.
🔺At least one flew over the airspace of Seoul. Then one UAV proceeded back to the North, while another four disappeared from radars.
🔺The ROK responded with fighter jets and attack helicopters. The video above shows North Korean UAV being pursued by such air assets. The South Korean military also fired several warning shots.
🔺South Korea deployed a KA-1 fighter jet, but for unknown reasons, it crashed. According to Yonhap sources, the South Korean military speculates that DPRK drones were to blame for the crash of the aircraft.
🔺ROK military fired around 100 shots to shoot down North Korean drones but failed to do so, according to Korean media.
🔺South Korea sent its own unmanned vehicles into the North in a “corresponding” step.
🔺Flights from Incheon and Gimpo airports were temporarily suspended, as it was requested by the military officials
The last time a North Korean drone intruded South Korean airspace was in June 2017. Locals reported the sighting of a small aircraft in Inje, Gangwon Province. At that time, the drone took pictures of Seongju County in North Gyeongsang Province, where the U.S.-made THAAD missile defense system is deployed.
There wasn’t any precise information whether the drones were armed or not. In my opinion, the UAVs were of reconnaissance and surveillance type.

🇰🇷 Will South Korea acquire nuclear weapons?
President Yoon Suk Yeol made remarks regarding the deployment of nuclear weapons in the Republic of Korea. The government doesn’t rule out the possibility of obtaining such weapons either from the US, as its main military ally, or with its own capabilities, because, according to Yoon, the country has the scientific potential to have a nuclear program. So, will the country acquire such powerful weaponry?
I have no doubt about South Korean scientists - they seem to be able to do anything. But under the circumstances there is another very important factor to consider. It is the US position on the issue. I wrote about the confusion that has happened recently regarding the joint exercises involving nuclear weapons between the US and Korea - Yoon and his administration said negotiations were under way and Joe Biden and other US officials said the exercises in question were tabletop, where there is only simulating of scenarios in which nuclear weapons could be used. Sides, especially the USA, didn’t consider any nuclear deployment on the territory of the ROK.
That makes one important point clear - Washington opposes the possession of nuclear weapons by Seoul. Why? North Korea would make it clear right away that the South should not have done so. Of course, it will not lead to a full-scale war, but relations between the DPRK and South Korea, which are already at their worst, will deteriorate completely, leading to more instability in the region. Does the US need this? I don’t think so.
Yoon Suk Yeol can say what he wants. This is his way of trying to intimidate North Korea, which has broken all records for missile launches that year. The country ended 2022 with the successful launch of drones into the South, which the South Korean army failed to shoot down. The statements about nuclear weapons can kill two birds with one stone - reassure South Korean people and frighten the North. It is that simple, in my opinion.

President Yoon Suk-yeol said Tuesday the South Korea-US alliance is strong enough to bounce back from any conflict of interest or trouble.
Yoon made the remark during a Cabinet meeting held days before he travels to Washington for a state visit and a summit with US President Joe Biden on April 26.
"The president said the South Korea-US alliance is not a relationship that meets and parts according to one's interests, but an alliance rooted in the universal values of a liberal democracy and market economy," presidential spokesperson said.
When asked whether the president was referring to the recent controversy over allegations the US eavesdropped on South Korea's presidential office, a presidential official evaded a direct answer.

China has lodged representations with Japan over Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s ritual offering to the Yasukuni Shrine, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said.
South Korea’s Foreign Ministry also protested Kishida’s ritual offering. “The Korean government urges responsible figures in Japan to face its history and show humble introspection and true remorse for the past with its action,” a spokesperson said.
The Japan Times reported that Kishida sent a ritual offering to the shrine in relation to the start of a spring festival on Friday.
The Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo is seen in China and South Korea as a symbol of Japan’s former military aggression, honoring Class-A World War II criminals, who were found responsible by killing thousands of Chinese and Korean people.

Top business leaders from Japan and South Korea announced they will use a fund meant to underscore the two countries’ burgeoning ties to strengthen their cooperation in energy, industry and other sectors.
Japan Business Federation and the Federation of Korean Industry announced a fund of $1.5 million in March. The money comes from an initial installment of $750 000 from each side to complement efforts initiated by South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol’s government to resolve a historical dispute over Japanese brutality.
The two groups selected specific areas of joint projects for the Future Partnership funds, focusing on youth exchanges and industrial cooperation. Areas of focus include semiconductor supply chain resiliency, energy security, maintaining the free and open international order, and climate change, among others.

China is renewing its criticism of this weekend’s summit among the leaders of the US, Japan and South Korea, saying no country should “seek its own security at the expense of the security interests of others and of regional peace and stability.”
“The international community has its own judgment as to who is creating contradictions and increasing tensions,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told reporters.
Beijing has made clear the current rapprochement between South Korea and Japan was something it very much did not want to see and its top diplomat, Wang Yi, last month made an appeal to racial-cultural similarities between Chinese, Japanese and Koreans as an alternative to partnering with the West.

Britain and South Korea will launch negotiations on a new free trade agreement (FTA) and sign a new diplomatic accord during a state visit by South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol this week.
The Downing Street accord will also see the countries agree to work closely on areas such as semiconductors - which South Korea is a major producer of - and artificial intelligence.
Yoon's visit officially starts on Tuesday with a welcome from King Charles, where he will receive a guard of honor and take part in a procession towards Buckingham Palace.
