🇭🇹 The head of the Rally of Progressive National Democrats, Eric Jean Baptiste, was assassinated in Haiti. The car which the politician was traveling in was fired upon by unknown persons believed to be members of a local gang.
The murder took place in the Laboule 12 neighborhood controlled by the Ti Makak group.
It was involved in the murder of the director general of the Public Enterprises for the Promotion of Social Housing (EPPLS) and former senator Yvon Buissereth, who was killed and then burned in August 2021 with his driver in his car. Several police officers were killed in the same area after confrontations with gang members.
Eric Jean Baptiste has already escaped an assassination attempt on Oct. 1, 2018. The businessman and politician is the head of a foundation that provided support to schools, universities and people in Haiti affected by natural disasters and the pandemic.
This crime should demonstrate the gangs’ growing influence in Haiti. In particular, the G9 Gang has been blockading the Varreux fuel terminal since September in response to the government's plan to cut fuel subsidies and to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
Or this might be a mere attempt to create an excuse to intensify foreign intervention.

Trudeau arrives in Bahamas to meet Caribbean leaders as Haiti crisis deepens
🇧🇸Trudeau is participating as a special guest at the summit of 20 Caribbean leaders in Nassau.
His office said the trip will allow leaders to consider political, security and humanitarian assistance to Haitian people.
🇭🇹Haiti’s de facto Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who was not elected to the role but will nonetheless participate in the Nassau meetings, has asked for foreign military intervention — and the U.S. has previously suggested that Canada could lead one.
The United Nations supports such an intervention, but the idea remains unpopular in Haiti.

🇭🇹🇺🇳🇰🇪UN approves Haiti security mission to fight gangs
The United Nations Security Council on Monday authorized a foreign security mission to Haiti, a year after the Caribbean country asked for help to fight violent gangs.
The 15-member council adopted a resolution, drafted by the United States and Ecuador, that authorizes the so-called Multinational Security Support mission "to take all necessary measures" - code for use of force.
China and Russia abstained from the vote, wary of authorizing the blanket use of force under Chapter 7 of the founding U.N. Charter. The remaining 13 members voted in favor.
Kenya stepped forward in July with a pledge of 1,000 police. The Bahamas then committed 150 people, while Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda are also willing to help.
Foreign Affairs Minister Alfred Mutua has said he hopes Kenyan police officers will arrive in Haiti by January, but authorities from the East African country have shared few additional details about the mission.
In a statement on Tuesday, Kenyan President William Ruto said his country's participation in peacekeeping missions around the world had prepared it to lead the force in Haiti.

Haiti’s prime minister Ariel Henry landed in Puerto Rico on Tuesday late in the afternoon on a chartered flight that originated in New Jersey. Tracking data showed the flight was heading toward Dominican Republic, which shares with Haiti the island of Hispaniola, but circled mid-flight before diverting to Puerto Rico.
Meanwhile, Jimmy Chérizier, a former elite police officer who leads a federation of gangs that has claimed responsibility for the attacks, repeated Tuesday his goal of blocking Henry’s return and forcing his resignation.
🗣 “Our goal is to break the system. We are fighting against Ariel with the last drop of our blood,” Chérizier said.
