๐ณ๐ฌ Nigeria Supreme Court blocks release of separatist leader
Nigeria's Supreme Court on Friday overturned a judgment by a lower court that dropped terrorism charges against separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu, ruling that he should stay in detention.
Kanu, a British citizen who leads the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), disappeared from Nigeria after skipping bail in 2017. He was arrested in Kenya in 2021 and charged with terrorism.
Supreme Court Judge Lawal Garba ruled that Kanu's seven-count terrorism trial at a lower federal court should continue.
Kanu's IPOB campaigns for the secession of a part of southeastern Nigeria where the majority belong to the Igbo ethnic group, and carries out many terrorist acts in the region. Nigerian authorities have labeled IPOB a terrorist organisation.

๐ณ๐ฌ Nigeria fines Meta $220 million for violating consumer, data laws
Nigeria fined Meta Platforms $220 million after investigations showed data-sharing on its Facebook and WhatsApp platforms violated local consumer, data protection and privacy laws, the head of the country's competition watchdog, Adama Abdullahi, said on Friday.
Nigeria's Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) said Meta appropriated the data of Nigerian users on its platforms without their consent, abused its market dominance, and meted out discriminatory and disparate treatment on Nigerians, compared with other jurisdictions with similar regulations.
Meta did not immediately comment.

๐ณ๐ฌ๐ณ๐ช Nigeria and Niger sign security deal, despite rift since coup
Nigeria and Niger have signed a deal to boost their security cooperation, the Nigerian military said on Thursday, despite tensions between the neighbours since a coup in Niger a year ago.
"Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to resuming and strengthening collaboration, with a view to ensuring regional stability and security," a Nigerian military statement said after the signing of a memorandum of understanding by the nations' defence chiefs in Niamey, Niger's capital, on Wednesday.
Ties between the two countries soured after Niger's junta toppled Mohamed Bazoum and the July 2023 coup has also split the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), raising questions about the fight against Islamist violence in the region.
ECOWAS threatened to invade Niger if diplomatic efforts to restore the democratic government failed, prompting Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali to pull out of the 15-country bloc in January.

๐ซ๐ท๐ณ๐ฌ TotalEnergies Withdraws from Africa
French energy giant TotalEnergies has announced its exit from two key oil fields in Nigeria, the continent's leading oil exporter. The fields in question are the Olo and Olo West blocks, which were being developed in collaboration with the Nigerian National Oil Company.
As reported by Agence Ecofin, TotalEnergies sold these assets to the local firm Aradel Holdings for $19.5 million.
This move is part of TotalEnergies' broader strategy of reducing its footprint in Africa. Over recent months, the company has been focusing on streamlining its management structure and optimizing its portfolio of oil and gas assets, leading to a steady decrease in investments across the continent.
In late July 2024, TotalEnergies had already divested 10% of its shares in Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, effectively exiting 18 oil and gas projects in the Niger Delta.
These shifts are also driven by the Nigerian government's initiative to enhance the role of national companies in oil production, moving beyond merely collecting royalties.

๐ณ๐ฌ Nigeria licenses first floating LNG plant for export and domestic use
Nigeria's oil regulator on Friday granted UTM Offshore Limited the first license to operate a floating liquefied natural gas plant, to tap flared gas from an ExxonMobil
oil field in the Niger Delta.
Such plants are springing up on the continent as Africa seeks to tap its gas resources. Nigeria has more than 209 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves, but loses over $1 billion in annual revenue due to gas flaring, government estimates show.
The 2.8 million tons per annum (MTPA) floating vessel owned by UTM will tap flared gas from ExxonMobil's Oil Mining Lease 104 (Yoho field) in offshore Akwa Ibom, in southern Nigeria.
Farouk Ahmed, head of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), said the plant's capacity had been upgraded from 1.2 MTPA to 2.8 MTPA due to growing LNG demand.
The engineering work will be completed in 2028, and production will roll out in the first quarter of 2029, UTM Offshore CEO Julius Rone said.
